Yes, the programming card is simple to use with the motors, just connect a motor and power supply and the programming takes about 1 minute.

The manual is useless, but it is pretty well self explanatory

Come back with any particular questions.

Cheers kinmel, I will be picking up a ESC and program card from a club member
on Sunday. I will let you know how it goes,if it goes later.

1 Question is where does the card plug in,in the start up circuit?
do you just plug the esc into it to power it up through the bec?

The servo lead from the ESC goes into the RH socket which has 3 pins.

You can plug a free standing BEC into the 2 pin LH socket, or if the ESC has a built in BEC,, you can power that up and ignore the power socket.

The ESC must NOT be connected to a motor.

Press the left button to move through the options ( labelled ITEM ), next button moves through the values for the selected item, once they are correct for an option press button 4 to save the value.

Button 3 is a reset and is there to annoy you.

Well I used the program card to set up the esc. eg setting
mode 1 =3 forward & reverse pressed set.
connected up no forward, only reverse
same for mode 1=2 forwards & reverse with brake.
mode 1 =1 forward & brake
did not work at all.
Any Ideas?

I have just used my card to re-program a HK 70amp Boat ESC and the changes are working every time.

Check you are using the program card correctly.

Step by step -

1. disconnect the 3 wires to the motor.

2. plug the ESC servo lead into the RH socket on top edge of the programmer with the  signal wire to the left.

3. turn on the power supply to the ESC, if it has a built in BEC the programmer will show a read-out for item 1.  If there is no built in BEC  use a standalone BEC, or another 5V source.

4. Once you have a working display  use the "item" button to change the display to "1"  and then repeatedly press the "value" button until you get a reading of "3"

5. press the "OK" button, the display should flash momentarily to other numbers.

6.  disconnect the power supply to the ESC, or separate source before you remove the ESC servo lead.

7. Reconnect motor to ESC and the servo lead to the radio receiver and switch on the transmitter.

8 turn on ESC power and wait until the series of beeps from the motor have stopped. No beeps means you have a power supply problem.

9. test motor from the transmitter.

If the problem remains try using just the "reset" button on the Prog. card to get the ESC back to factory defaults and see if it works at all then.

If not something is broken

Thanks kinmel,
tried both options, only works in reverse. I have now set the esc to 100%
reverse so I just have to change channel direction on the transmitter to
use it as a forward only esc,

Just swap over any two of the three wires between the ESC and the motor, then the motor will run in reverse when the transmitter stick is set to forward.

Which ESC do you have ?  The HK 125amp Boat ESC does not have reverse, despite what the description says and others may be the same

Sorry kimnel,
I should have stated which esc. It is the Hobyking 90A boat
It would only work on the down movement of the stick so changing the motor
wires would make the motor change direction but not the Tx stick.
The hobyking boat esc program card will not power up using a separate Rx
battery in the L/hand socket it will only work by the bec when I power up the esc.
(Rx battery disconnected of course). On set up e.g. item 1  1-3 when o/k is pressed
a number 5 appears in the r/hand window, and through the other items when o/k
is pressed number 5 appears. Is that normal?
when connected to the motor, switch on, I get 3 bleeps followed by 2 short bleeps
then the motor works but only one way.

Daft question mode
Have you checked that the throttle channel is not reversed on the transmitter settings?

Hi essex,
to answer your question there is never a daft question, well unless I ask it anyway.

The Tx throttle channel was on normal.e.g. up = forwards, down= reverse.
As for my other boats, brushed and brushless.

The hobyking motor esc set up in this case would only work on the down
 movement of the stick.
So as to get some use out of it I would have to change the throttle
channel so the motor would work on the up=forward mode.
for the model, if any I put it in.

hope you can understand my explanation.

The "5" is correct, so the card is setting the data on the ESC.

When I connect my motor and power up I get TWO bleeps followed by another 2 beeps ( on a 2S Lipo ).

As far as I know, the 3 bleeps means it is entering programming mode, but i have no idea why it should happen without you doing deliberately.

Manual programming is carried out with the motor connected to the esc, so try using the programming card when the motors are connected and see if that solves the problem.

Otherwise the esc must be defective.

The manual, such as it is, can be found at http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uploads/427192367X406737X53.pdf

Thanks kinmel,
downloaded the manual, such as it is,to see if I can set it up through the Tx
but as you say, I think it is a faulty esc. The card seems to be o/k
to the one you use to set up your esc,s I just never seem to have
much luck using brushless set ups. I have used brushed set-ups
for years and never really had a problem. I think I should wait
till the brushless esc,s have been tried and tested a bit longer.

cheers

Hi guys,
I set up the esc through the Tx, {:-{ guess what, it now works perfect. O0
Forwards and reduced reverse.(Whew)what a relief.
I switched off to see if it stored the settings, it did.
I really hope the esc has a good memory.

 :-)) Thanks for the help

Hi guys,
just received 2 more hobbyking 90amp ESC,s
Just out of curiosity I connected them up (without using the prog). card
switched on the TX, powered up the motor circuit and the ESC worked perfectly
so they must have a factory preset with full forwards and reduced reverse.
I tried the other one and ditto. So therefore you only need a card if you
require a different set up.So they are plug and play.

So yet again with Hobbyking parts, this batch is set up with different defaults than the previous batch.

Still exceptional value though

The timing default of the programmer is set at twenty degrees advance but there is the option for an "AUTOMATIC" Setting. Anyone know what this actually means?

The Automatic setting allows the ESC to adjust the timing to suit conditions whilst in use, low values increase RPM but lowers torque at the bottom end and a high value does the opposite.

High Kv motors prefer low advance settings.

With boats it is usually better to set it to automatic, unless you have specific performance requirements.

I know this is a old thread but I have an issue with the HK 30A Boat ESC.

When I start it up you have, accordingly to the manual, set the stick in full throttle position and after the 3 double bips move it to neutral and wait for the bip's to stop, done that and only have forward movement, tried the same but moved the stick full reverse still only forward movement, the moved the stick to full throttle after the 3 double bip's moved it to neutral after 1 bip set it to full reverse and I have now full forward and 25% reverse as programmed but there are no "slack" or pause between forward and reverse what the h.. do I do wrong ???  >:-o

These units give three options.

1.  forward, no reverse
2.  forward, brake, then reverse
3. forward, or reverse

Option 2 requires you to pull stick fully down and then release to neutral ( that's braking in a car, but ineffective on a boat) , after braking reapply stick down and boat reverses.
Option 3 goes from forward to reverse without pause, allowing prop to act as brake.  For your preference from stick up, you need to pause in neutral and then pull stick down for reverse.

These motors react with huge torque, only the brave use sudden stick movements.

Option 3: Problem is that there are no pause in neutral it's either forward or reverse, I'm missing the "slack" from when you move the stick from neutral until you get a reaction either forward or reverse.

That's the "dead band" setting.

Make sure you also calibrated the endpoints.
