Dragen sailboat to R/C
« Reply #1 on: February 15, 2013, 07:12:23 pm »

I am trying to convert a static Billings Dragen sailboat to r/c.This is my first marine project,my wife thought it would keep me out of trouble!   My question are....Can I get away with just a r/c sail or do I need to have a moveable r/c rudder too? The intention is to make it go round corners.          How do I go about "trimming "the yacht if it does not float reasonably upright?it has a lead keel so do I just add or subtract weight in side the boat?     Thanks in advance to {:-{ anyone who can help

You will need a rudder the larger the better.

an over scale sized rudder is recomended , youll need to servos a standard 3kg/cm on the rudder but a larger torque servo to haul the sails in would be a good idea . ive got my own dragen  but not yet on the water . jon

I know of one such person with brillant woodworking & metal bashing skills  O0 ...however unfortunately he is currently locked out of his workshop & is reading up on the results of underwater galvanic action........Derek  >>:-(

Yes you will need an RC rudder if you are converting to RC.
You can get away with RC rudder only, and no RC sail adjustment, but you must have rudder control.

The alternative would be to turn it into a pond yacht. This has no RC, you set the sails and set the rudder (using Braine Gear) and then launch it to a friend on the other side of a pond.

Derek, creept into that carpenters workshop took photos of his true scale sailing trawler. It has an expanding rudder by remote control,a steel plate between ply outers. The expansion  is greater than shown, pulled it out by hand, no battery in the boat, didn't want to brake it. HE WAS A SLEEP  in the sun after a good lunch.
