Motor choice: Robbe or MFA Como?
« on: February 17, 2013, 11:49:54 pm »

Looking for motors for a 31" twin motor tug.
One choice is to used geared motors, either the Robbe or MFA Como 6:1 on 12V.
Any opinions from people who have tried one or both of these?

Have not come across 6:1 units from Robbe, but I stand to be corrected. The 3.3:1 units are a bit agricultural for a big firm like Robbe. The MFA units use metal gears and are low current motors, as long as you use the 540/1 motors. The Rocket 500 and Stingray 500 units by MFA used the buggy type 540 motor and would produce a mid-speed racing tug, however, I dont think these units are available any more.

The MFA units use metal gears

On that subject a fellow club member tried out his new build, Aziz.
This morning down at the lake.
On turning everything on he tried his motors, as you do,and his rudder servo
started glitching quite badly.his motors are on left and right sticks.
We tried the motors one at a time and found the starboard motor was the
problem.
On taking the deck cover off I noticed he had run his rudder servo
lead over the motor gearbox cover,"that caused the problem" (metal gears)
cause radio interference. once the lead was routed out of the way of the
gearbox, everything ran smoothly.

He didn,t know that metal gearboxes or metal surfaces rubbing together
 could cause radio problem.

Was just looking online and the Robbe unit is actually 5.5:1.  The MFA 6:1 will be almost $50 cheaper for a pair when the cost of mounts are included.

Should answer most questions.

Thanks for that.  I think I will be using either MFA 919D or 970D with 6:1 gearing.
