U S S McGOWAN DDG678 1944
« on: February 20, 2013, 03:30:56 am »

Hello shipmates, a story to tell. I received a box and a plastic bag with bits and pieces of a model ship from a young bloke I had helped with his R/C model previously. He said that his brother had bought it a long time ago and there were parts all over the place, missing etc. They were cleaning out the back shed and came across the mess as he called it. The were going to take it to the tip with the other rubbish but remembered that I did models and perhaps I could use it for spare parts. There was a lot missing but I thought I could rebuild it into something I could sail at the billabong along with my other ships. I decided to do her in measure 32/13D from 1944 as USS Mcgowan would have looked. Along with using A3 card, toothpicks and other stuff here she is still unfinished but nearly there. I just have a few things to fit and paint and then go to the shed for the fishing line. A bit rough but still presentable for sailing.

and yes she is the Lindberg kit after all but I did not want to spend money on her as I did not know what was missing or cut off or just plain ruined. Armo61

The ubiquitous Lindberg Blue Devil... My, my they sure do get around.  ok2

Going to paint the hull or leave as-is? Great find despite it being the much-maligned Blue Devil. I wouldn't have refused either. Also, it looks like only the 40mm twin Bofors have been removed or missing (you have found a few of them it seems).

Nice looking ship, you've done well with her. I do static models and never chuck anything away, sprues etc. Something may just come in handy ok2

Armo61,

Did you build this kit up from the box and bag of parts or was it already assembled, or half done? That's not very clear in your original post. Is she ready for trials?

Hello Harquebus, sorry mate I have been away for a while. In answer to your question it was not assembled just bits and pieces. A few parts were missing which I tried to scratch build. Yes she has had her sea trials and went well except for a slight leak around the twin screws. My fault didn't check my work. OK now. I have better pictures of her now as finished except for final numbering:-)
Cheers and hope you are well
