Coastal express m/s Kong Olav
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:46:06 am »

Oh boy!
Sat here for 15min and typing a story about my build, pushed the "spell check" button and everything dissappeared!!
I´ll do the text later, don´t feel too happy right now. Enjoy the pictures though!
All the best!

So sorry to hear you lost your type written letter.

it's always a good idea to  'copy'  the letter before doing extras like adding pictures or, in your case, checking the spelling.

It's a very touchy Forum system these days and keeping us all on our toes.    :} :} :}

I do like your build. A pleasure to the eye.

Cheers

OH BOY!!! This looks GOOD... :o :o :o

OK if I tag along for the ride?

Interesting method of producing the main structures.  The hull does not look like glassfibre - is it ABS? Vacformed?
And the method of plotting the windows on the hull.....a printed sheet overlaid on the hull for marking out!! Plastic or paper?

I look forward to your words to accompany the pictures  :-))

What scale is she? 1:100?

Beautiful lines............

Your welcome Carl, hop onboard! I´m following your kit development with great interest, we are many that´s been waiting for a ferry kit.
As for this one, yes she is 1:100. The hull, front, funnel and masts are ABS as well as some fittings. The decks are wood.
Nothing is premarked on the basic structures, only some of the fittings. The method used is a lasercut paper template, place it according to markings on the hull. Drill holes through some of the portholes and secure it with small nuts and bolts. Mark out the lines and windows and portholes. I was very sceptic to this method but I must say that it turned out okey. Wooden crossbeams and stringers are glued to the hull to support the wooden decks. The inner superstructures are made out of ABS plates. There are printed templates for all parts in the manual. I have copied them and cut them out, then place them on the plastic for marking. This is not a kit for the beginner, the manual is very messy and confusing, but with some experience you will prabably figure it out. There is a thread in the "Whats in the box" section with all parts in the kit shown. I love the lines of this old vessel and I hope to have her in the water this spring.
All the best!

Thank you Dave, and thanks for that link too. How did you find that? It's more or less a summary of her career. I read somewhere that she's been laid up in Malaysia for some years.

Hi Hama
This thread looks real good.
She is a real nice looking boat. I think it was this model built up I saw in a model shop in central Stockholm.
The build looks hard ,but looks like you are in full control on course to make a great model.

Update!!
She´s had her first testruns and after some experiments I´ve now found a suitable motor. It runs best on 6v and the bowthruster needs 12v. Found a cheap converter and decided to test it. It is adjustable and worked great on the first test. Will this device "eat" power from my battery or will it save power as it reduces power to the motor?? Are there any other risks I should be aware of? Would be nice to have one 12v battery instead of one 6v and one 12v.
As soon as the technical stuff is done I can proceed with the next deck.
All the best!

Hi Hama
she does look nice on the water. The only risk could be the converter getting hot. But if you haved fuesed it  ,it  should be ok.

For safety I would put it in the middle of the boat, the hull is too fragile
This will make a nice model :-)) :-)) :-))

All devices eat power.

The proper way is measure the load taken from the battery,  with or without the device.

Cheers

Hello Hama,

your model build of the Hurtigruten Postal Ship KONG OLAV looks pretty neat.
She'll draw much attention when you will sail her on the pond.

A while ago I drew the hull lines of a very much look-alike Hurtigruten ship which could well have been her sister ship.
I.e. the PS FINNMARKEN which was built in the mid-50s at the Hamburg shipyard Blohm & Voss.

If you compare her lines with those of your hull I would say they look very similar.
I have the impression that the KONG OLAV's stem is slightly more raked, and then of course there are differences in the arrangement of the superstructure.
But as for the first cursory sight they could be taken for sister ships.

Albeit, I think that was a common Postal Ship design in that era, very much like if you compare contemporary Hurtigruten Ship designs which service the Norway round trip today.

What were the main particulars of the KONG OLAV?
Does your kit's manual reveal them?

Regards,
Ralph

Hello Ralph and John, and thanks for your compliments.
Im no expert on these vessels, but I'll try to explain what I know.
M/s Finnmarken and Ragnvald Jarl were sisters and slightly smaller and older than m/s Kong Olav.
Kong Olav had 3 near sisters, Nordnorge, Lofoten and Harald Jarl. They had different layouts of the funnels and masts. All these six vessels are available from "Hobbyruten A/s", as well as a few others I belive. They dont have the best internet site around I'm afraid. Talked to the owner a year ago and he was developing a new kit of the m/s Narvik and sisters from late -70s early -80s. Very nice vessels and I hope he succeeds.
All the best!
