I find it incredible that the food producers did'nt realize that their meat was 'chevaline' because it tastes very different from beef. They would have been obliged to add a lot of flavouring to disguise this taste. It's all about profit margins, dishonesty and misrepresentation.

I think that once the food technologists have decided on the recipe, it is 'raw material in, finished product out'. The same as any other production process. And the product going out is frozen.
The only person who might have a clue is the guy handling the raw meat might see a difference in texture or color. But as few of these people are butchers, most are overworked and would not stop the line, who would speak out really. It is the kind of chat for the coffee room ("...that meat going through this afternoon looked a bit off...").

I often wondered how they keep tabs on where food comes from, where wood come from, etc.

My suspicion that all these paper trails were actually just a big show and they had no idea at all is now ... proved correct.

Sometimes I wish my cynicism could actually turn out to be unfounded  <:(

Enron, MP expenses, credit crunch, Greece.....

I suppose it these days of austerity, everyone seems cutting back, companies cutting corners
and all the middlemen shaving off a profit. I guess it's always been happening to a certain extent
but this time someone tried to make a little too much profit and got caught out, a little to much
diluting and someone one forgot to 'mix thoroughly until looks convincing!'  This was always going
to happen and maybe just a matter of how long it was going to take for it to be made public.

Disappointing that the big supermarkets have now revealed they do ZERO product testing!   >>:-(

.... what's next?!!    {:-{

Too much is being said about the horse meat, its the fact that anything could be in food is the problem

Disgusting ready made food is full of hidden rubbish under the description things such as `stabillisers` and even more hidden as processing aids or similar , i dont understand people buying `ready meals` as they often take longer to cook and taste nasty with a dreadful texture and a funny smell

I think the fact that chicken is full of horse....thats the problem, not that its horse, its the fact that they put it there to hold the added water in the meat , its necessary!
I say take the water out and no horse, pig, beef, plastic or similar is needed in the formula....meat shouldnt have a formula

In Bulgaria , its better than the UK....as long as you buy carefully , (obviously I dont buy minced `meat` in Bulgaria but then again I have a mincer and mince my own in the UK as well)

Most meat in Bulgaria is localy produced ( usually far too often its a neighbours pig....or chicken ) the local shops sell the food that you have watchd running round the roads for the last few months, or the cows being walked around by there owners, the animals ( and people ) have a much higher standard of living over there in many ways.

Even town supermarkets have virtually free range meat for sale, all far cheaper and better taste than anything ive had in the UK

There certainly seems to a case here for tarring all the Supermarkets with the same brush.
However....being married to a staunch member of the W.I. I now know that Morrisons have their own abattoir and every bit of meat sold in their stores has a provenance going back to where and when it was born, on what farm etc.etc. etc.
Naturally enough, there aren't many WI members on this forum, but some of you may well be married (or something) to one of them.Ask. Even Morrisons themselves have kept this fact "low key", even though it could have been a bit of a killer weapon against the charge that all
supermarkets are involved. BY.

Don't believe for one minute that Morrison's are bullet proof. I am more than vaguely aware of (a) certain store(s) having serious issue with their fresh meat section.

Morrison's may have provenance for the raw meat they sell.
I was connected with a food factory who supplied frozen ready meals
to Morrison's asda tesco m&s coop lidl airline meals RAF flight meals
Falkland fairy meals all made with mince that came from Spain or Ireland
Slightly different recipes but mostly the same ingredients.

I think both are - We already had a version of this thread three weeks ago. Just a shame that it appears in the recent oposts list and contibutes to shoving the 'boaty' stuff off.

Unless you have personally watched the animal 24/7 from birth to your plate you can never be 100pc sure of what is on your plate or what it might have eaten or had added/injected during its life or processing. So mostly you are taking things on trust of other people  even if you live next to the field (you think) your meal was running round in.

It's not the horse that's the problem - it's the loss of trust.

Exactly.
If the ingredients said 'Horse meat 3%' then you have an informed choice
As to whether you buy it or not.
All joking aside I like to know what I am eating.
The labellng should be truthful

I don't think we are looking at large percentages of horse.  Most of the reports I recall say things like "traces of horse DNA were discovered...".  To be honest, if they looked hard there would probably also be traces of lubricating oil from the machinery, traces of  human skin from people involved in the processing, and so on.  It's a storm in a teacup (may contain traces of coffee).

Well, there have been a few 'traces of' reported but in the original data release there was about 30% in one product and a more recently tested ready meal had 100% horsemeat. That's not a slight discrepancy.
