I love meat, I thought I should say this first.

There is a newish term bouncing around at the moment, we are being encouraged to become 'demitarians'. This means having a half vegitarian diet, cutting back to eating about half the meat we did before.

The demand for meat has increased tremendously in recent years. As developing countries get richer they also want to consume more meat. This demand is part of the food fraud problem. Not to mention all the mechanically reclaimed meat and other pink sludge that goes in cheap foods.
The meat industry is also incredibly damaging to the environment, due to land clearance (Amazon clearance for burger beef), industrial farming methods requiring lots of agrichemicals, this includes growing all the extra animal feed. It is a very inefficient way of getting calories. It is also very expensive in monetary terms.
Then there are health issues to consider. Eating too much meat is not healthy. Having recently had a heart bypass I am more aware of what saturated fats can do.

I have by default become a demitarian. My appetite is also now smaller, I have lost a lot of weight without even really trying, hopefully my arteries are healthier. I still eat meat, and I still eat sugar, bread, chocolate and all the other stuff. I just eat less meat and more veg.

The only thing that has got fatter is my bank balance.

:-))
The spirit of Malaprop lives on.  Just did a bit more staggering down the right bit of memory lane - Vegans were the menacing opposition who had an orbital fort in "Cities in Flight" - James Blish.
An almost equally unlikely story.
Anyway Spock was a Vulcan, from the planet of hardened rubber.
