Another First Build From Plans (HMS Sheffield)
« on: February 23, 2013, 05:49:55 pm »

 Thought it was about time i posted how i was getting on with my first scratch build from plans. Have the hull finished ready for sealing. Just started on the super structure  any one spot the, not so deliberate mistake. I have had to make a very slight adjustment because of this mistake but it won’t affect the build. I hope!
Got to start looking at the prop rudder and motor next this should be interesting no idea what i need at the moment bit of research on the cards I think

 Slow and steady that’s the way. Don’t have a lot of time but it is progressing, the biggest problem is my impatience don’t want to rush things

Going to start paintingsoon  How many coats of primer and top coat do people usually use just bought a can of halfords primer used the lot on the hull only got 2 coats on needs a good rub down and more priming though. Wil need a shed load at this rate.

Looking at the contents of your workbench you'll fit right in here.  Model boat, can of beer and a lump hammer!  :} :} :}

I'm using Halford's "rattle-cans" for the first time as well - I found that 2 coats of primer (rub down between coats) followed by 2 of the top colour seems to be ok.
Once all the hull "extras'" are in place - i.e. pennant numbers, depth markings etc.. spray with a coat of matt varnish to seal the whole surface.

That's the way I'm going with my current model anyway.

if your finding the normal primer is not filling in your imperfections(grain etc) then you could try the filler primer. It a thicker paint designed for building up surfaces. So you put it on a rub back etc.

That's good stuff O0  You will need a number of coats, rubbing each one back until you get a smooth surface. I use it regularly and it does a good job.

Well worth it, judging by your build.  It's coming on nicely. Well done

Start to come together very nicely. I would fit the running gear and water test her before you go to far as leaks might be hard to to fix  and damage you hard work while trying to get access.

I would use the plans and have a go at making the walrus yourself would be cheapest option and lots of info out there on them.

This guy in the states does 1/144 scale resin kits. His walrus looks ok but the royal navy never paint them brown if your doing her pre war then the silver scheme but wartime they war camoflaged grey and green and duck egg underside
