Aeronaut Queen build (first ever I might add)
« on: March 06, 2013, 05:50:47 pm »

Well, here it is.  I started my very first boat build :D   I know I would have given myself an easier time of it with a complete hull or non wooden kit, but I'm really quite shallow.  I chose this boat because I like the look of varnished/polished wood.  Good reason huh? lol.

The quality of the hull frames looks excellent and it's definately a deep V hull a  la' Huntress.  Go for it!  8)

That does look very good indeed. Myself,I'd use z-poxy inside rather than poly resin, but its yur choice.

Well done Keith you don't hang about.  That hull looks great.  8)
I'm not sure if this kit also includes chine strips running from the bow to the stern. If not, then it would be well worth adding them along each side to the bottom edges of the sides. Otherwise, at speed, the bow waves will rise up to the deck level and not be deflected away from the hull and wash onto the deck. A couple of 1/8" by 1/8" strips would be about right for this hull. I've looked quickly on Youtube and there are a few videos on there and I noticed that a most of the boats appear to be sailing without chine strips and pondered whether they were included in the kit. How tricky was it fitting the bottom and side sheets?

I think they're included in the kit to be honest. T'missus (Coastal) says she forgot about zpoxy or she would have told me, lol.

Well, the move being over with now it's time to give some more attention back to the old Queen, (no off colour jokes here please).  Just applied another coat of sanding sealer to hull ready to attack it later on and succeeded in making us both see pink penguins due to the fumes {-) .

I recall being advised on here roughly what scale it is, what with it being loosely based on the Fairey Huntsman.  So now I'm on the search for 1/8 scale fittings.   Anyone any good leads on that?  Also figures.  Nothing irritates me more than seeing a boat trolling along with no one driving :-) .

Well.  Four more rails in place and with the cockpit floor performing sterling service in place of huge long clamps which i dont have, theres little else i can do till the morrow ;)

Really quality work, you are braver than me, my first boat kit has pre made Hull but I agree with you the look of a wooden hull is unbeatable.
You have given me inspiration to try one next time :-) , really looking forward to following this build.

Thanks for sharing.

Front deck hatch appeared to be missing something. So planked it using veneer strip. Coated with sanding sealer and will add hatch detail when dry.

Decided to go for a contrasting hatch cover. Didn't like just adding the etch work. Kind of looked a bit like an afterthought.

So. Having prepped the hull to accept the deck it was glued, clamped abd taped in place with much help from Coastal {-)  Some might look at the amount of tape used and think paranoia, but better to be safe eh?

Then after a few desultory attempts at carvery on the blocks of wood supplied by Aeronaut, a quick hunt through Ebay turned up a far more satisfactory solution.  I was informed by the helpful Perkasaman on here that my boat is 1/8 or as near as makes no difference, soit occurred to me that the much touted James Bond DB5 partwork was also 1/8 and a spare seat was duly ordered from Ebay.  It does require a wee bit of filler work and some minor alteration to be sure, but once finished it can be moulded and two more cast. Looks better than badly carved wood I think.

Started building the removable well deck section, most things seem to locate well.

Sad thing is, Aeronaut neglected to supply part 63 which is the table.  It's meant to be made to look like the deck floor and I know I didn't throw it out.  So......make a new one.  Rummaging through the waste ply I found a bit which nicely accommodated the tables dimensions, and using the by now ubiquitous mahogany strip made it look a nadge more attractive than plain ply.

I next intend to edge it with plastic strip possibly painted silver to resemble that awful 60's/70's brushed or anodised aluminium.

The replacement kapitans chair (co-pilot too) is coming along slowly, lots of blobby bits of filler added takes ages to dry before I can sand it back so the chair is at least symmetrical.
