1st race this weekend!  :-))

What are the rule changes this year?

Has BBC got any races live this year?

.... Damn Sky!  >>:-(

As usual, BBC will only be showing half of the FI races live, with text commentaries for others and edited highlights later in the day (after you have failed to avoid finding out the result.)

Only other option is SKY, who will be showing the lot, in between adverts.
However, you first need to buy an HD television, then upgrade your SKY package to both HD and SKY Sports, which is a lot of money just to watch the races that the Beeb are not covering.

F1 is one of my main TV highlights.  Rarely watch much else on BBC.  License fee compulsory.

If you have HD you get the F1 channel included, you don't have to buy the Sky Sports package.

I think I actually prefer Sky's coverage to the BBC. Granted there are adverts, but not during the race, and you get all the practices as well that the BBC don't have time for. And since we already had sky HD, it was a very nice surprise to find out we didn't need sky sports as well.

But on the subject of the races, who do we think will win the championship this year? I don't think there are any major rule changes, they'll come next year with the V6s.

HD not quite compulsory on Sky - channel 406 works OK.  I'm not sure that HD would make a noticeable difference to me with my eyesight anyway.  Of course, new buyers of Sky will almost certainly be firmly directed to HD.

Wollongong is only about 500 miles from Melbourne....if I stand on my balcony I may be able to hear the roar of the engines in about 1/2 an hour
Here is the reported cost of tyres for the F1 season.........€19.5m  would keep all of us in model steam components for a long lifetime...... :o
.
Sources suggest that the original figure of €5m per team for a season has been dramatically reduced to just €1.5m. That is far more acceptable to the smaller teams, who this year – like everyone else – have been getting Bridgestones for free.
If as planned there are 13 teams next year, that figure would give Michelin a handy €19.5m with which to kick start its programme...........  %%  ...... Derek

I admire most of the drivers & the engineers that build & develop the cars but the politics leave me stone cold, they are a bunch of VERY bad people.  F1 needs a house cleaning from the top down. Mick B...

Just turned on for the start of the programme. It's been 10 minutes and the 'We're really sorry for this temporary fault' message has just gone down. Oh, fun...

Apparently Melbourne's just had a power cut and a thunderstorm.

And gone again.

The qualifying has been moved to the 11AM local time, midnight GMT, with the hope the rain will have stopped by then. From what they've said, the race will go on as normal.

Is it true that transferring the F1 drivers into boats was considered??? {-) {-)  The good news for the fans is that it is expected to be dry in Melbourne today.

They sure had a "smashing" time yesterday, I don't think I have ever seen so many crashes. However Vettel played it cool as usual, no heroics just steady as she goes, best driver in F1 hands down.Mick B.

i think its only because he has the best car. look at schumacher the last couple of seasons. not so good car and very little success yet at his peak he was the best driver. the common link again was he had the best car. and i realise he was out of racing for a couple of years but he was among the fittest drivers on the grid all the same. just my thoughts and not looking for an  argument with anyone..

qualifying  results. vettel, webber, hamilton, massa, alonso, rosberg, raikkonen, grojean, di resta, button. couldnt understand why mclaren signed up  the mexican perez. i thought there would be plenty of drivers in the current lineup who performed better than him, then i read an article where mclaren are looking for a new sponsor and a mexican billionaire was a prospective sponsor. of course they denied that was the reason he was signed. yeah right.

In all fairness, there were relatively few crashes. Sky showed the 1999 Australian GP last night, where two cars caught fire on the grid, three then stalled, one never left the grid due to a gearbox failure, both McLarens retired due to mechanical faults, the two Prosts wiped each other out, Villeneuve's rear wing fell off for no reason, giving Schumacher a puncture 14 laps later, and so on and so forth.

Out of 22 cars at the start of the race, 1 didn't start, 13 retired and only 8 finished. Schumacher last, Eddie Irvine winning for Ferrari.

I think they said last year that the perfect F1 combination would be Adrian Newey (Vettel's race engineer and the guy who designed his car) and Lewis Hamilton, but Christian Horner (Red Bull team principal) has said he will not pair Hamilton with Vettel.
