Well deserved win for Mr R this moring

Alonso would have won had he not had that silly beard.  If he shaved before a race the weight reduction would gain him a tenth a lap :)  :}

Mr R & Lotus ran a perfect race, Timi is brilliant when he is on form but he is erratic. Vettel did not have the best car several times last year but he is still world champion three times in a row. Unfortunately it is getting more like Nascar every year, it is no longer a motor race but a tyre endurance test. At this level the teams should have their own choices on what tyres they run.The powers that be are trying to make it so everyone comes over the finish line at the same time giving the impression that the racing & the teams are equal. Having raced , taking away an advantage you worked hard to get over sometimes many weeks or months to me is unfair, after all it is in the end a test of who can put the best performance together. That's what I always though when I raced. Mick B.

Excellent BBC introduction on 2013.
Interesting race I thought!
Sutil  did really well! (Didn't realize why he was out last season - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Sutil#Shanghai_nightclub_incident_and_assault_conviction )

So, 2013 is the season of the tire wear!

Naturally we had full coverage here in OZ.......but one of the elements in the amazing 2.5 second pit stops [for four tyres] was we didn't get the see the refuelling .... >>:-(  ...I don't quite understand how they achieved this in those few seconds.........Derek

no refuelling now unfortunately. refuelling stops is one thing they should bring back. there was always plenty of action during them and at worse if its a boring race its something to liven it up a bit.

The problem with refuelling stops is the cars then just drive flat out for the whole race. Since they now run with less fuel than they need to complete the race at full speed they have to slow down which leads to more overtaking and more strategic racing.

When refuelling stops were standard the pit stops would take almost 10 seconds, and the wheel guys could take their time, but now they have to work fast. This way you get pit stop incidents when the wheels don't get fitted properly.

The best pit stop was Hamilton's last year, where they changed all 5 wheels in 3.3 seconds.

Bring refuelling back? Oh yes, very amusing watching the pit crews beating the fire out due to the sealing baffle in the hose sticking and splashing fuel all over  %)

You want exiting? change the steering wheel so it just has a horn button in the centre, gear change on a stick and three pedals.

See the Beeb have gone sicko phantic again over one of the Petro err Mercadees drivers, the other one seems to have been given Micheals car.

Notice first bit of rule bending went unpunished, "Someone" reversing back onto track in qually one.

The reversing manoeuvre was not against the rules, as it was deemed to be in a dangerous area. The rules say that if a car becomes stuck in a dangerous area they are allowed to reverse out of danger and back on to the track when the immediate vicinity is clear, as to bring in a recovery truck would necessitate stopping all traffic.

Mansell, Estoril, wheel dropped of in pits???  The "Dangerous" area was a straight on Saturday AND off the track. Having said that, he was allowed to carry on despite flapping rear bodywork  %)

Just after coming out of a corner and the car right on the edge of the track and the line all the other cars would be taking ?, so quite dangerous, so instead of yellow flags and 5 mins or more of lost time getting the car off the track, a quick reverse while it was clear, a smart move.

I guess that was why Mclaren was able to win, fancy having 5 wheels, what an advantage. SORRY I just could not resist that one. Mick B.

Tyrell used to have a six wheeler F1 car. O0   Much less known was the March with the multi wheels at the back.

The 1965 Honda RA273 was an incredibly complex V12.

I would love to have a car I didn't have to put petrol in, but wouldn't fancy having to change the tyres every 25 round trips to work  %%

OK Bob there is the car of your dreams, no heat generated, engine has no moving parts, fuel does not burn, used on one of the fastest dragsters in the USA during the 70s...how was it powered ?

Now you have to be an expert on the rules, what ever happened when first past the post without a rule advantage was the winner. It is obvious to me that the tyre rules favour certain teams. When I raced I won my fair share, but the rules also kept changing. It was like they looked at what you had done to gain an advantage & then made a rule to negate that advantage, after 19 years battling the rule book & losers protests I retired, in all that time I never lost a protest against me. I can say also I NEVER cheated once. I just ask what has happened to good old fashioned racing, where the fastest man or woman was the winner, completing the race in the shortest amount of time. Sorry, rant now over. All three drivers in Melbourne deserved their place on the podium, possibly in a different order though. I might be biased as I think Vettel is the best, he is on a level with Jim Clark & Arton Senna. Mick B.

Jim Clark, Mick :o  now you're showing your age O0  Here are 2 shots of him, one on a parade lap in a Holden station wagon, and the other in action on the track. Both were taken by me at Lakeside, Brisbane, in 1965. One of the slides is showing its age too.

Hi Peter, I always thought Jim was the best by far in his day. I was on a ship coming to Canada when he got killed in Germany . A very strange thing happened, we had 250, give or take 4 or 5 Scotish nurses also on the ship. The night before he got killed there was a Fancy dress ball on board & I loaned my racing gear to one of the nurses dressed with a sign that said Clark, she finished second. I never ever loaned any of my gear to anyone after that. It had a profound effect on me for a long time. I would have liked to see him race but never did. Thank you Peter for the photos. Mick B.
