yACHT sAILS
« on: March 18, 2013, 01:47:21 pm »

Hi Folks,
I have bought an HFM Marine '590' yacht which has sails made up from pieces of some kind of very fine plastic sheeet. These 'pieces' are taped together with some kind of tape and the same tape is used to reinforce the conners where cord is utilised to tie the sails to the mast and booms. Where can I obtain such tape and the sail material as it seems a mystery to supliers I have contacted thus far.
Thanks for any help, Fred Graham

the material your describing is mylar used for model yachting racers all over the country the sheets are stuck togester with 6mm double sided tape. Probably won't get it in the ordinary model shops so try these guys Sailsect http://www.sailsetc.com/ or Housemarting sails  http://www.housemartinsails.co.uk/

Alternatively

Double sided tape can be found on Amazon.com, look for waterproof/outdoor grade.

A substitute for Mylar is florists film.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for all your quick responses. As it happens I kept trawling the 'internet universe' and was advised by one of the South Coast Boat suppliers to contact PJSails. I have placed my order for £0.75!!!  for a metre of tape and expect it to be delivered in short (6" Strips) very soon. The lady to whom I spoke was most helpful so I will, no doubt, be taking advantage of their services again.

Thanks again for you help which is most appreciated and always very prompt on this site.
All the best, Fred Graham

I buy my double sided clear tape from my local sewing shop. It comes on a roll about 10m in length for around £3.

Hello Dickyp,
I understand that you buy your double sided tape from a local sewing shop. What exactly do you ask for as I imagine that for a yacht it must be waterproof and I did not expect that a sewing shop would stock waterproof tape, although I may be totally mistaken. I am also unsure as to why I would need double sided tape as the intention is to join two parts of a sail together with tape on both the upper and lower elements of the sail and have tape on both sides of both pieces.
As it happens I now have taken delivery of Mylar tape in yellow (HI-Viz)  from PJSails albeit in 6" lengths. I have yet to apply it to the sails.
Meantime thanks for your response and the information and I will have look in my local sewing shop to see what they stock.
All the best, Fred Graham

Joining two mylar sail panels together needs a 6mm double sided tape along one edge
then the second panel is stuck overlapping the first and using a slight curve, some belly
will be given to the sail making it much more efficient than a flat panel. HTH

Hi fredgraham
netleyned is absolutely right about how the dounle sided tape is fixed
when I first bought this tape I just asked for double sided tape and they provided it
Never had any problem of it coming apart

Could anyone please advise on tightening the back edge of the sail (Leech ?) which I believe is done bu overlapping the mylar film
Is it just overlapped at the leech or is it also overlapped at the luff
How much is the overlap please
Regards

The material is overlapped all the way across the sail; the overlap is more in the centre to provide some camber in the sail.
It can be done using sail blocks, or an alternative is the "Claudio Gadget"
For making and using the Claudio Gadget see

I have a plan to make myself some set of sails based on two layers of mylar foil and an aramide net between them... I even "invented" the way, how to do that  ok2  Of course, it will be an experiment only (at least first try) and it will be one piece sail, without the seams. So - I have a question. Some time ago, somewhere, in a far, far galaxy  :embarrassed: I saw the Excel calculator for the sail profile... but I cannot find it anymore. Maybe some of you, guys, remebers, where it was? I remember, that it should be some of NACA profile, but I need to recalculate curves to the size I need to build camber board.
