SUNKEN U-BOAT DIORAMA-COMMISION TO BUILD ANOTHER!
« on: March 18, 2013, 08:54:01 pm »

Well, well this has come out of the blue. I have had a bloke at the caravan site I am on who has asked me to build him a replica of my sunken U-Boat diorama-see thread: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,42005.0.html he is willing to pay for the model and the paints and my time etc; he mentioned around £60. Now, I think the model is good, but I am rather nervous about this as I have never been asked to build something for anybody  {:-{ he wants to display it at his van. Also, do you think £60 is too much? I have no idea...any help please.

That is a tough one!

It is our hobby after all, and it is your call!

Well, cost paid is one thing, but the hours...how many who knows!?

Do you not have a minimum wage in the UK? Maybe that is a guideline?

As you say, it is and isn't a problem. On one hand it is great to be asked and it will probably be just a one off, but my model took around 20/25hrs of total build time so looking at £123ish if I charged £6.19 an hour, I can't charge that + the model kit etc. I wouldn't pay that for a 1:125 scale plastic kit despite what it had done to it.
Not sure what to do.

I would say £60 is probably OK, especially if he has offered that amount. Is this inclusive of the kit and paint? If so you need to take into account what is left over after the costs are removed.

Break down of costings:
MODEL: 1:125 scale Revell U-99 £18.
PAINTS+SPONGES, BRUSHES+GLUE: £12.
SAND/SCREE: FREE.
BASE (FREE, IF I CAN FIND SOME BOARD THE RIGHT LENGTH, OR...): £7.
PLAQUE: £4.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: ?
So, without my time added on we are looking at around: £41ish. So that would mean I would have £19ish for my time. Of course a few quid could be saved in buying cheaper model/paints.
What do you think?

Hi Wayne, yep the £60 includes the price of the model, paints etc and time in completion.

Eddie,

a problem only arises if the word spreads and more are asking you for "favors"!

On the one hand, it is your hobby. Secondly, a caravan site may be a close knit community...

I guess the key is, would the "job" prevent you from doing other "projects"?

In the affirmative, ask much. If not, and you just do what you love to do, take it easy and cover your cost!

A nice BBQ and honour is worth more than 20 Pound!

My 2 pence!

Cheers! (how much is 24 cans of beer? Maybe this deal could be done without involving cash other than cost!)

Cheers, (again!)

You could go the way of selling your one and then using the experience from your first build you may end up with a better model?

Hmmmm, food-er, beer for thought there. Not a bad idea at all.

I will have to ask him as I think he likes the idea of having a 'commission' build. Something he can tell his mates etc.

Cheers Dave, I will insist on top quality beer, no cheapo stuff and the BBQ must be fresh meat etc, no frozen rubbish...slab of horsemeat okay with you?
Actually, my caravan is 50yds from the sea, I have beach fishing gear, cannot use it anymore due to my hands, arms and shoulder problems but I may get him to catch us some nice Sea Bass...there is some beauties just off the East coast.

Is it a fair price? No one but you can answer that. What is your time worth? or sometimes it is just fun to do.Get 50% down payment, 25% at mid-point (pre agreed mid point - like mounting on base or once sub painting is done or ?) and the remainder at finish. All non-refundable. Just a suggestion.
Peace,
Tom

If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Hi Tom, sound advice and something I may asked him as that way it sounds more 'commission based', many thanks for that.
