Building the FV Cornelia Marie
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:58:36 am »

After watching the "deadliest job" season 1-8 over and over again I decided to build the FV Cornelia Marie. There is a german webpage with a plan of her in PDF version. It can be used for reference but has some flaws ... Scale is 1/32 which is 132cm long and 27cm wide. It will have 2 motors, working lights and sound. And with the help of pumps the storage tanks for the king crabs will be filled with water.

Starting with the templates ...

Cutting the 8mm plywood

arranging the bulkheads for simetry ...

... and finally glueing the bulkheads together.

I don't know the boat or the specifications, but I have one question, won't be to heavy using that ply?

Good luck missyd  :-))

Im currently in the process of making most of the fleet, i havent cut my forms for the cornelia yet, but the structural drawing is done.

Can you just confirm your dimensions, as from many sources the cornelia is 125 feet which would make it 38.1m at 1/32 scale this would make it 1190mm long her breadth is 275mm as in real life its 8.5-8.8 m

im not sure how the americans measure their boats but the cornelia isnt the same length as the northwestern its noticably shorter, i have allowed for this in my plans. I have an overhead shot of the NW CM TB and wiz you can see how they compare

good luck i will be following your progress

Thanks a lot! :-))
You're right I did miscalculate the length of the CM ...  {:-{
Anyway I still can change the lenght without any problems.
I downloaded the plan from the link and it is not exactly to scale ... therefore the boat is too long ....
The heavy ply will make it heavy but maybe I may save some ballast by using heavier ply for the bottom part of the CM?

BTW we have made some crab pots too!  ;)

We (I and my love Anita) have also built some crab pots for the CM. Planned are 48 pots sofar ... maybe even more.

We use 1.5mm2 copper wire normally used for houshold power lines. Easy to cut bend and soldiers well with a soldiering iron from Weller.

just a few pics how we made them ... we have some wooden blocks as templates. A lot is done by eye. Without any measurements.
Pot are around 70x70x30mm

Templates for bending the parts.

Checking the crab pot size with a 1/32 fisherman made out of FIMO by Anita

Netting is from my local frabric shop. Its silver and I do spraypaint it before its fixed to the pot.

Size is just right!

Sewn together before they get spraypainted.

Its fixed to the pot itself with very thin copper wire

Finished crab pot ... buoy and rope (both selfmade) ready to be attached to the pot.

Ready to get some King Crabs out of the Bering sea!

Thanks a lot Tony. I do love scratchbuilding a lot. Actually I do build models but I seldom "play" with them. As soon as they are finished I loose interest in it and start another one!  ok2

I am slowing working on my model of the CM ... next big challange is the bow wich is completely wrong on the plans I have. So I came up with my own set of plans for the bow.

Looks nice!

And I made some cardboard templates to cut the wood ... not shure if the result will be the right shape of the bow. But I can still adapt them if neccessary.

More crab pots have been made by ma fiancée Anita .... there are some 28 waiting to be loaded on the CM.

Still following with interest! are you a carpenter by any chance? %)   your woodwork really is clean and crisp - well done.  Anita's crab pots are excellent.
