Bow ist taking shape!!!! Some adaptation work has to be done on the bulkwards but it looks fantastic sofar! The wooden spacers (28x28mm) are just there to keep everything square and evenly spaced....last 3 pieces glued on later last evening.

More work done in the last days ...

Internal view of the bow. It came out rather nice and the openings allow access with my hand if I had to sort something out there.
Next I will cover the bow with balsa/plywood.

In the meantime Anita finished crab pot no.31! Now she make ropes ... we need 2x2m of rope per crab pot and 3 buoys (one of each: large, medium cylindrical and a small round one).

Sorry for not posting anything for some time. In summertime its difficult to stay inside and build models if outside the sun is shining and the weather is more like Sicilia than Switzerland.
I used 2-3mm Balsa to cover the prow of the Cornelia Marie. I just sanded it down to see if the proportions are OK. The whole hull will be covered with 1.2mm plywood. Strong enough to witstand any storm on the Bering sea ... model-lake.

Just a few pics from the last days work I've done ...

I fitted the deck on the CM ... will glue/screw it after I cut out the openings.

Did use a lot of putty to get the holes closed.  Anita is working here.

These are the two 12V motors I use ...

Mockup of the accumulator. I may use 3 of them (12V/9Ah each). Everything in front of the wood dovel will be the crab tank filled with water.

Hi Danielle,

your scratch model build of the CM is taking shape and is gradually becoming a spitting image of the real vessel. Congratulations! :-))

I admire your diligence jigsawing so many frames.
The sheer number almost looks as if you have taken the real building frames and stuck to the scaled down 1:1 frame spacing,
hadn't you told us that you had drawn your own plans or even didn't care for plans at all.
But these many frames must give you a pretty sturdy hull.
Maybe they will even help you to avoid any thoughts on extra ballast.

I certainly will follow your build's progress.

Hi Ralph

Thanks a lot. I did use a plan (PDF) downloaded from the net but it was not as accurate as I hoped. I redraw all frames. OK 19 of them are the same size. The narrow spacing is a result of the 28mm wood I used as spacer. For another project I wouldn't use the same technique again... I also have a cardboard model of the CM. Its used for the overall proportions. Any other details I take from pictures I found on the net or on the Deadliest Catch DVDs.

Progress is very slow as I always have to find a solution for everything. Crabtanks are ready to be built, motors can be installed, hull can be planked with 1.2mm ply, the deck is ready for the cutouts ... but first I will paint the inside of the hull for waterproofing.

I wish it could be possible to produce some sort of black smoke ... blowing out of the smokestack if revs going up ... wonderful. (just dreaming)

I harbour the same wish whenever I see those poor thin fumes emitting from the average model smoke generator.
I would rather like to see opaque, thick black plumes of smoke defying any efforts towards ecologically correct so-called Green Shipping (or more appropriately, Green Steaming). %%

Got the deck cut out and glued/screwed to the hull. Hope this makes the hull sturdy enough for roughest seas and the models weight.
First opening is for the working crab tank, second for the batteries, third is accesss to motors, speedcontrollers, pumps and the last one is for the ruders and electronics like soundmodule/RC ....

Time to test the unfinished CM in the bathtub!!! Hull safely covered in a plastic sheet and wow!!!!! It floats totally stable!!!!! Unfinished hull weight is 4.8kgs.

Picture shows hull in water with 10 + 4.8 = 14.8kgs. Nearly 5cms in the water. not enough! Waterline is aroud 10cm.

Ok more weight ---> 10kgs (cans/bottles) added till 9.5cm are reached ...

I couldn't add more wiehgt ... hull got instable because of high point of CG. I must say that with the right weight added the CM will be as stable as the original CM!

The total weight for the test was over 25kgs! It need another 3-4kgs to reach the right waterline. Now I have to get a lot of scrap iron to fill all avaiable space with it ...

I am looking for 2 pieces of soundmodules. Must have a good modern diesel sound and reasonably priced. I was thinking of using the one from Technobot Programmable Engine Sound System Mk2. Are they OK to use?

http://www.technobotsonline.com/programmable-engine-sound-system-mk2.html

The CM has 2 engines .... is there really a need to install two of them in the model?

The Mk2 version is listed as having two RC inputs and would use the higher speed (ESC) to the output of sound from the unit giving you the fastest engine noise from which ever side id running the fastest

Yes I read this option ... maybe it would be nice to have 2 sound modules for a better sound maybe even a little bit out of sync L/R engine??

Very nice job and inspiring! :-))
Somewhere I have some pictures of the real CM moored in Kodiak Alaska (about 2 years ago). I don't mean to hijack your build thread but I would be happy to post them if they would be helpful.
Best regards,
Andy

Hi Danielle,
Congrats on thinking of a novel way of test floating the CM and inventing a new accessory for pool parties at the same time ! In case the lack of stability should affect your plans (Though I wouldn't think so ) the greater part of that loss was due to using cans/ bottles of liquid, each of which were not 100% full. This slack 'water' causes a thing called 'free surface effect' which decreases the stability markedly. If you think of the difficulty of carrying a washbowl full of water because the contents slosh about, this is in effect what is happening in every can etc.
After that useless bit of information ! Enjoying following the progress of your excellent model. Thanks !

regards

Mike

I took these pictures in Kodiak Alaska in 2011 (I recall) when she was laid up between fishing seasons. I hope they help with some details. :-)

I wish I had taken more photos at the time but the boat is so tall I couldn't find a good spot to get capture a lot of details and in Kodiak AK, you don't dare board someone's vessel unless you've been invited...
I grabbed a few pictures of the Time Bandit hauled out of the water at the shipyard, as well. ok2

Just one question about the color of the Cornelia Marie. Is it really green like seen on your pictures.

If you don't mind ... would you please send me the pictures of the Time Bandit by email? ---> missyd at gmx.ch

I bought 4 batteries each 12V/7Ah and 2.7kg ... 9.8kg in ballast from the batteries ... nice! I need over 25kgs ballast ....

The Anita and I put some color to the inside of the hull. Looks nicer and waterproofs the inside as well.

Cardboard mock-up of the lower part of rear superstructure ... nearly OK! The rear sloped walls need 1-2° more ...

I was up in Kodiak in late March or early April and the light can be kind of funny. I'm pretty sure those pictures were taken late in the day and the light made the paint look a little greener than you might expect. I think early that day it rained, snowed and then it cleared up to a beautiful afternoon. Ha ha!

I can definitely email you some Time Bandit pictures tomorrow when  locate the camera chip (again....) {:-{
BTW - you've done a nice job shaping the bow. The plans on the website shows a bow that, in my experience, seems to be a little too pointed. Yours is much closer to the style of many of these boats.
