Television Centre
« on: March 22, 2013, 08:31:43 pm »

I see the BBC Television Centre is about to follow its one-time neighbour, White City, into the history books. Something of a celebration on BBC Four this evening.

I was lucky enough as a youngster to be taken to the top of the building whilst it was still under construction. The father of a school friend was a director of T C Jones, that part of the 600 Group that supplied the cranes for the project. And afterwards lunch at Bertorelli's in Shepherds Bush where would almost always see some BBC character, on this occasion Mr Pastry.

  Ah, youth!

I see that the building/land is to be redeveloped, will this mean demolishing the whole lot and starting from scratch? Surely this will destroy the Blue Peter Garden, nurtured over many years by successive presenters, and what of the statues of 'Petra' and 'Shep' the Blue Peter dogs, they were also features of the garden......

The buildings will remain as they are Grade II listed.

They will be converted into an hotel, offices, shops and a leisure centre. The very original studios (which were still in regular use) will be retained as such for use by independent production companies as well as the BBC still using them.  They are situated behind the large brick wall with the BBC logo on it and the 'mushroom' lights all over it.

The courtyard in front of the building, leading from Shepherds Bush Road, will be opened up as a public plazza.

The whole site was sold for £200,000,000.

The Blue Peter garden (which incidentally was designed by Percy Thrower) has been moved to Salford where the programme is now made together with the statue of Petra and other memorials. I've just watched the programme whichever was excellent. It seems from most comments made by the guests that everyone believes it is a mistake to close the centre but I guess TV has changed tremendously in the past few years and maybe such a "factory" is no longer needed. I know nothing about TV apart from what's on it. Maybe they said the same things when they left places like Alexander Palace to go to the new TV centre in the 60's. Nostalgia is a thing of the past it would appear.

I got one for writing a letter, the subject of which now escapes me, the badge was lost  eons ago. I also sent in for the balsawood glider plans, which took ages to arrive, a Slingsby Dart, if memory serves.....
