SD14 Lines drawing
« on: January 25, 2013, 12:50:56 pm »

Hi, I'm a retired ship model maker, previously owned Scale Models Weston, based in Weston-super-Mare.
When I retired in 2004 I managed to keep several G/A's. One of these was for an SD14 standard design cargo ship. When working I built 6 models of these ships for various owners.
I have now decided that the SD14 was one of my favourite models and I am starting to build one for my own collection.
As I said I have the G/A but need a lines drawing or hull sections or body plan. Scale is not important.
I have tried the Sunderland archives but no luck there.
CAN ANYONE HELP. ????
Cheers. Norman Hill.

The cardboard model ship company, Marcle Models, used to sell a big card model of an SD14 so you could try browsing the cardmodeller forums to see if anyone there has the drawings.  The maritime museum at Greenwich has a SD14 model so they could have drawings of her, worth an e-mail just in case.
There's also a book called "SD14 The Full Story" by John Lingwood.

I was only recently looking at the Marcle model myself.

I suppose it might be possible to make a working model from the card on, or even, with some considerable work make some frames from the card.

Being a standard design and mass produced, the hull I assume is likely to be a fairly simple form, and perhaps a rough enough to use one could be drawn from the GA by someone in the know and with the facilities?

The Marcle model really does appear to replicate all the parts of the ship1

Yes a great build for someone interested in the practical building methods, with lots of time on their hands!

Hi Norman,
Check out my thread from a couple of years ago....

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=28543.msg280898#msg280898

You will see that we did just that, took the card SD14 and made her sailable.

Took a few years, but for the outlay of the original card kit (about £300 I think) was well worth it.

Saved a whole lot of ball-ache trying to figure the ship from drawings...

Carl

PS - she still sails beautifully....

And it just occurs to me, ministeve and co have their 15 foot SD14 that they use for towing, they might have some lines etc hiding away, or at least could advise I'm sure.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I built the 15ft. model you are talking about. It was in 3 sections with open holds for ballast.
As this was to be a working model I more or less built it from the G/A and photos of my previous models.
I can draw a fairly accurate lines plan with the information I have but as this version is to be a static, exhibition model, an original Austin & Pickersgill or Bartram drawing would be a great help.
Cheers Norm Hill.
