Leaks!
« on: March 28, 2013, 07:24:00 pm »

It looks like I won't have the PFC Genereux (a Krick Victoria) ready for the family reunion again this year, not enough time in the day to do what I need to much less what I want to.  Anyway, I pulled the Krick Alexandra off the shelf since she is already finished, thinking I could take her to the reunion.  Some of you may remember I posted a few vids of the engine back when I had some problems with it.  Having sorted that out i decided to see if it would even float (since I had not done that previously!).  I filled the garden tub in the master bath and plopped the Alexandra in the water.  I immediately noticed a list to starboard (thats the right, isn't it?) I figured this could be easily cured with relocation of a component or two or some BB's.  To get to the point, after about two hours of sitting in the water it had taken on a more serious list and was LEAKING :(( !  At least an inch of water had found its way into the hull.  I immediately snatched it from the tub and using a large syringe, sucked the water from the boat.  In examining the hull I find the only place water could enter is around the propshaft and the rudder shaft, but I don't believe the rudder shaft was below the waterline.  Attached is a pic so that hopefully you could assist in my determining where this is leaking.  I have marked the only three locations that I can see that may be the culprit. Upon close inspection the one on the left isn't a crack at all, so I'm left with the propshaft and the rudder shaft.  Suggestions?

Seal around the entry points in the hull of the prop shaft and rudder with 2 part epoxy resin and put grease in the prop shaft and rudder shaft to make sure you have no ingress of water there.

Thanks Joe.  I was thinking some heavy grease in both may do the trick too.  After all it was in the water for 2+ hours.  I can't imagine a steaming session lasting two hours straight!  At least not one of mine!

Hi Cal, to identify the places where it is leaking, put some water in the boat, and look to see where it is coming out, just be careful you don't get the electrics wet.

Good idea, Nick.  I'll try that as soon as I can.  The way free time is around here lately it may be a while!
