masking up each coat
« on: April 01, 2013, 05:16:06 pm »

I have been reading about taking masking tape off when the paint is still tacky. What if you are applying more coats, do you have to mask up each time or do you leave it on untill final coat
thanks

I've always left it on until the final coat.

I usually peel the tape off after it's completely dry myself. I have tried taking it off when sticky but sometimes you get like sticky strings between the paint and the tape where the paint tears and they then fall onto the bit you had masked.
Dry paint can chip as you peel it off but unless your paint is really thick or brittle, unlikely on a model so it shouldn't be a problem.

What tape do you have? Normal masking tape from DIY stores can bleed and leave a rough edge. A line of Tamiya tape is good then use the bigger, cheaper tape outside of that.

%% I use the same method as Graig you can also mask up with area to be painted at the bottom so that gravity works in your favour, I have
found this way I get the best results,
