New project
« on: April 04, 2013, 07:03:30 pm »

My partner (pearslfirstmate)and I are very competitive and have come up with a challenge. All of our models boats are of the engine variety and we fancy dabbling in the yacht territory.
We have decided that our task will be deciding on a yacht that we will each build and decide when finished who has the best build. The next task will be to see which one sails the best or which skipper can sail the model better than the competion.
Our problem is deciding on a yacht. We are informed that the pond we use BDMBC has a tenency to weed up so we would like to avoid bulb keels. Does anyone know of a yacht kit that is long keel, quite traditional, probably cloth sails and must be around 36" or for the youngsters 1 meter. It should also be 'pretty' as in looks like a boat not something out of startrek. I am sure there is a kit out there but I can't find it. It need not necessarily have a wooden planked hull but that would not cross it off the list.
Most of those I see for sail have bulb keels and I understand why but that is not what we want. We are going to Coalville on the Sunday so any trader reading this who has what we are looking for take one with you as you could have a sale of 2.
I suppose I am looking for a 36" bermuda rig J class. There's a challenge.
Thanks for reading this Chris G

Hi Chris

I have an Inga 4 and it's a lovely looking boat. The kit is no longer available but Kingston do the hull and a set of plans for it and it's long keel so maybe just what you want.

Thanks to you both Slug and Rich
Checking the information out and the Inga4 looks very much like the very expensive real life' Nauticat. The hull mouldings look really good and they also do a traditional yacht but the boss has decided she will not attempt scratch build so I have to find 2 identical kits. This is beginning to look a bit of a challenge in itself. <*<
Thanks for your help someone out there must make a trad. yacht kit. Chris G

Moonbeam seems the only answer for a long keel yacht kit.
Talk to Dave at Coal ville.

Hello Ned
I would tend to agree and she is beautiful but at 52" she is a bit on the large size and I would need to buy 2, £500 plus sails at another £220 will have to give this serious thought. Thanks for the help and will definitely talk to the man at Coalville.
Take care Chris G

2 models that fit the job are the Victor Models Soling 1m and V32k.

VM are stateside and you would need to import. I did this for my boat.

Hello Chris.
You could also consider the Nottingham or Canterbury J Class. The web site is www.jclasshulls.co.uk and you will also be able to view the yacht at Coalville.

Hi Chris, having bought a J class Canterbury kit from Alan, (but not yet started) have to say I don't think you can find a better quality hull anywhere - a choice of  superb finishes and they are absolutely flawless. He's an easy going helpful chap to boot. PJSails are also fully ofay with Alan's models and can supply 3 suits of sails and all the deck fittings etc to complete.
                                                             Regards, Tony.

Hello Tony
Thanks for your recommendations, always useful to have independant feedback. I think decision time will be at Coalville on Sunday although will have to count my pennies first and see if I can do a deal when it comes to buying two. The hulls certainly do look lovely and the finished size is about what I was looking for.
Best regards Chris G

Helo Tony
Well we are just back from Coalville and you were certainly correct about the J Class and Alan and his dad Ian, both helpful and informative. Big investment 2 but they are beauties and for long or full keel maybe unbeatable, we both did think are they to good for what we them for, can't imagine scratching the hull!!!!
Spoke to Dave  who produces the Moonbeam, unfortunately he did not have one on display, very impressed with the sails his wife makes, they are traditional and beautiful.
Several others seen including the Comtessa but it is difficult not to come back to Alans J Class. Anyway no rush as long as we have the hulls and bits for around September.
Thanks for the help Chris G
