1:72 destroyer Drive systems
« on: April 01, 2013, 10:53:23 pm »

Hi all.

I'm thinking of building a 1:72 scale K class destroyer with two props, but I'd like to get as much running time out of it as I can. Are there any recommendations? I was thinking of either two small low drain motors in parallel driving the shafts or one big motor driving both shafts at once via a belt system.

My Italian Maestrale Class started out with two DUMAS 6 volt motors direct drive to 40mm propellers.
It later transitioned to two PITTMAN 14volt motors when I changed the systems to 12volt batteries.

Both ran systems ran great and could push the boat well past a scale speed.

Good Day Jack

I'm building a 1/72 scale Tribal Class Destroyer. She's fitted with 2 x Graupner Speed 720BB Torque 12 volt motors, turning 45mm props, each motor is run by a Viper Marine 15 (Plug and Play) ESC, both fed from a 12 volt, 7.2 A/h battery. Each motor pulls approx .9 amps unloaded (or 1.8 A/h together). When our club sails, sunday morning 0830 to 1130, I have yet had to change a battery during the sailing (she also very quick).

Thanks for the replies!
I actually use a Graupner 720bb motor with a 40mm prop on my 1:48 Flower class Corvette and I'm really happy with the battery life- it can do about ten miles on a full charge from a 12v 7ah battery.
I just wasn't sure if you could actually get a 12v 7ah battery on board a destroyer due to its fairly narrow beam. However if I could it would be ideal- just carry a spare in a backpack and it could probably do any canal run fairly easily.

I use a 12 volt 3.3ahr battery.

It is smaller, and I get a decent run time out of it.

To Thunderchild: What is the make and model of your tiller arm?

Thanks,

Rob

Good Day Rob

The brand wasn't listed when I bought them, the link is below (but I think they're a Robbe item), you get sleeves for both 3 and 4 mm shafts. It's the third item on the page.
