portholes
« on: April 19, 2013, 06:39:15 pm »

Folks there are no porthole markings on the hull I have, but there are on the plans I have.
I was thinking of the best way to include them on the boat, if I put a strip of masking tape along the hull where the holes should be, then mark the positions of the holes on the tape then drill the holes at the marks. Is that a method anyone else has used? or is there any other methods.

Hi dgp,
I think you will find that the way you are thinking is the method most of us use
I dont know what scale your plan is or what size holes you will have to drill
you havent said what the hull is made out off.
make sure you get the portholes you need before drilling any holes.
The holes on your plan could be the external porthole size.
I always drill smaller than the required size(to help avoid splintering)
and then finish off with with a tapered stone or file to the correct size
for the portholes

Thanks John, its th fleetscale HMS Lion hull, Im building HMS Queen Mary on it, I had a set of plans at 1/196 re- scaled to 1/128 at prontaprint. Fleetscale sell the portholes as one of the fittings packs so I'll be getting them I think, I dont know if anyone else would sell suitable sized ones.

Queen Mary eh? Fine looking ships.. I'm surprised we don't see them depicted more.

John Haynes sells a fret of 1/128 port holes. It's the port hole and the eyebrow above it. While you contact him, he's the best guy for the inclined ladders, 2 and 3 hole stanctions, etc.

Did you ask about planks width? let's say they are 8" wide. In 1:128, 8inches is 2/32ths or 1/16th. It's about 1.5mm width per plank.

They were 3inches thick in real life.
