New lithium-ion battery design
« on: April 19, 2013, 04:05:32 pm »

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a new lithium-ion battery technology that is 2,000 times more powerful than comparable batteries. According to the researchers, this is not simply an evolutionary step in battery tech, “It’s a new enabling technology… it breaks the normal paradigms of energy sources. It’s allowing us to do different, new things.”

Interesting.... That kind of battery technology is exactly what the modelling fraternity needs.  Also it does help with the likes of battery powered transport as well

No need to sell your shares as we still need to generate the electricity. John.

Umm!  {-)
It might recharge 1000 times quicker but the beeb reports that it is only 10 times more powerful.
Mind you, that is still a fantastic improvement in an industry where 10% improvement is a 'breakthrough'
Only problems at the moment are that it is difficult to manufacture and likely to explode.  %%

The breakthrough seems to be in getting a bigger surface area to volume for the plates, but the big questions are whether it will scale up to be useful, whether it will be rugged enough for real life use if it does, and whether it will be economical to produce.  Just a question of time and money, like so many things.
If it lives up to the hopes, it means that in the field of electric cars, the present sub-100 mile range gets increased to something like petrol car range, and it might well be that sensible recharge times can happen, so that, for instance the Top Gear day at the seaside can be done in a day, rather than over almost a week.
