The breakthrough seems to be in getting a bigger surface area to volume for the plates, but the big questions are whether it will scale up to be useful, whether it will be rugged enough for real life use if it does, and whether it will be economical to produce. Just a question of time and money, like so many things.
If it lives up to the hopes, it means that in the field of electric cars, the present sub-100 mile range gets increased to something like petrol car range, and it might well be that sensible recharge times can happen, so that, for instance the Top Gear day at the seaside can be done in a day, rather than over almost a week.
