Derek,

Is the day purely a date of rememberance, or is there a recognised way to commemorate or celebrate it?

Obviously all Oz 'n Kiwi replies appreciated...

Ahh, Canberra war memorial and Museum......brings back great memories of when the Queen opened the new memorial  to the fallen in her Jubilee year 1977.......My class of kids lined the way with a "class of Honour" when she went walk about...........the school I tought at, Campbell High was next door and I would often wonder over at lunch breaks to the museum and memorial................a lovely place for contemplation.

Have a good day Raaarty........I know ANZAC day means a lot to you guys.....my thoughts are with you.

Affirmative.

The day starts with dawn services held throughout the countries, cities and towns and especially at Gallipoli, where both Kiwis and Aussies, Government and people, attend.

Then in the morning Marches are held throughout in cities and towns where the banners of all participating units of all who served, are paraded as well as members of current defence force who parade their colours. Includes Merchant marine, as well as all allied veterans who now live is Oz, as well as visiting allies who are invited to March.

Now encompasses all conflicts to the present day eg, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan.

All shops are closed and it is a declared public Holiday.

The  RSL clubs, as well as pubs open, where all veterans/marchers can have cool refreshments and games of 'two up' are held, which is illegal gambling except on ANZAC Day.

I'm a very proud Dad today. Have just seen the video of the Charters Towers parade with my son in law taking the salutes. I love the fact that when Oz troops are deployed overseas they give little medals to their children. The wife's got the makings for Anzac biscuits for this evening. My favourites.

We will remember them.

"Those heroes that shed their blood
 And lost their lives.
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
 Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
Here in this country of ours.
 You, the mothers,
Who sent their sons from far away countries
 Wipe away your tears,
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
 And are in peace
After having lost their lives on this land they have
 Become our sons as well."

From a speech given by Kemal Attaturk at ANZAC Cove in 1934.
The words are engraved on memorials at ANZAC Beach, Wellington, and Canberra.

There were two topics on Anzac day so they are now merged into one.

Very pleasing to see more and more young people attending commemoration ceremonys and honouring their forebears. My dad (who is 94 and a WW2 veteran) was really chuffed to see young people in the parade and wearing their grandparents medals. For the present at least it seems that they will not be forgotten. My grandfather was at Gallipoli with the 6th batt. Green Howards - one of the lucky ones
he came home.  The men who fought were a credit to their  countries though the Very senior
officers in charge of the campaign were an absolute disgrace.

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda by the Pogues
says it all about Gallipoli.
