Try cleaning the touch pad and keyboard if you have a 'nipple' mouse.

does your mouse have a ball? or is it a laser, if it has a ball take it out and clean it (and remove the fluff from the rollers too). if it is a laser mouse (red light) it may be that the mouse mat is dirty or check for fluff where the laser comes out.

some times my lap top will judder :: on some pages up and down before it settles down what is the solution
Getting back to the subject without getting sidetracked turning the mouse over to check for nipples and balls, a good start might be to clean the operating system.  I usually start by downloading and running a copy of malwarebytes  then the same with a copy of ultradefrag or auslogics defrag and auslogics registry cleaner then give it a go with startup inspector for windows.
Between them they usually get rid of anything that has no business being there, clean up any space left, tidy the registry and the last shows what programs start up on switch on.  Remarkably few are needed, most (like printer programs) just take up resources.  No idea what is causing the problem because I haven't had it, but doing the regular cleanout usually gives useful clues somewhere along the way if it doesn't accidentally do a cure.
Not using a mouse implies using the trackpad.  On my presario CQ56 (got because it was cheap in ASDA) I used the control panel to attack my trackpad (=mouse) settings to get rid of all the fanciful stuff to avoid confusing myself.  Because I hate using the trackpad, I invested about £3.50 in a USB mouse.  Life is much simpler with the rodent.

I agree with the solution offered by malcomfrary........... :-))  nothing is more frustrating than when explaining a presentation or something via a PC & projector with a room full of people & the trackpad goes WONKY  >>:-( .......Derek

i would definatly make sure all drivers and sorftware is up to date. Do you use Automatic update via windows. Although not sure if microsoft may have stopped producing updates for vista or not. I have never used vista. Removed it as soon as my last laptop came with it on. Never got on with windows vista. Maybe worth upgrading to windows 7. It runs much smoother than vista.
