New home for ex-Gravesend Lifeboat
« on: April 24, 2013, 02:44:05 pm »

I would like to announce that the Historic Lifeboat Collection at Chatham is to receive a new permanent exhibit, the first since it's opening in 1996. The decision has been made to preserve the Mk 1 E Class Lifeboat E-002 Olivia Laura Deare, stationed at Gravesend between 2002 and 2008 (withdrawn from service in 2012).

The E class (built by Tiger Marine) were developed after the Marchioness Tragedy in 1989, when the RNLI were asked to provide a lifeboat service on the tidal Thames. Powered by waterjets, since their inception the three Thames stations, Gravesend, Tower and Chiswick, have proven to be the busiest stations in the country (In 2012, combined statistics for the three stations show 831 launches with 18 lives saved.

E-002 Olivia Laura Deare was funded by the late Mrs Olivia Deare, who had a personal connection with Gravesend. Her legacy has also provided E-002's replacement, B-827 which carries the same name.

The E class has had a difficult history; within two years, all had to undergo a major service and modification, 002 the first to receive this. Then, due to the wear on the boat, especially the engines, the Mk 1 is gradually being replaced by the Mk 2, beginning with E-07. It was decided that to commemorate the founding of the Thames services one of the Mk 1s would be preserved, at the largest collection of historic lifeboats in the country. As yet it is unknown the exact date when she will arrive, last we heard the cradle was under construction. Needless to say, we'll try and get lots more photographs when she's at her new home.
