Direct drive you do NOT need a gearbox with these motors....and before you ask Try Steve Taranter Model boat bits he has some caldercraft ones in stock and he aslo does the Ali Mounts for them.

Interesting.
The 900 motors that I have noticed previously (Graupner) run at about 6000rpm. Whilst I am used to endless windings of 500 motors I hadn't realized that the same was true for the bigger motors. These run at 300rpm which obviously makes them better for bigger props. What is considered the best tug prop for these?

Have used the caldercraft 900 motors in my MMM Eurogirl with 40mm korts and been very impressed with the torque these motors have .

The most important feature for high torque lo speed running 900 brushed motors is that they should/ will be 12 pole.  :-)

Tug Fanatic these motor will swing a 5ins 4 bladed prop at 6v with ease and also it will run a 55mm 2 bladed prop at 24v

Hi Wicker, it’s been quite a while since I built the Flying Spindrift (about six years) the first motors that I fitted were MFA 800 torpedo 2:1 belt drive reduction units. These units worked OK but seemed to lack a bit of power when needed so the motors were changed for the 850s. There is quite a big difference between these motors as the 800s have an off load rpm of 5,100 and the 850s 9,000. The 850s are still in the Spindrift and I have had no problem with this setup.

These sound like the equivalent of my beloved heater motors.

Please clarify the 24v prop size.

Main trouble with the MFA 850 motors is that they are very Amp hungry....What I mean is simple really they draw well over 12amps under load and this will result in Very short run times....Been there had the tee shirt gne to 900 Motor simply as they draw so little amps and give LONG run times

with the reduction belt drive system, i forgot to post a photo show the set up, Dave is 100% right about the 850s being very heavy on the Amps
