NEW DIORAMA...PLAN IN PROGRESS.
« on: May 06, 2013, 11:42:07 am »

Due to my disability flaring up I am struggling a little bit on my RC boats, hence I didn't get down to the lake yesterday-sorry Stan, I told you I would be there.

Anyway, decided to leave them alone for a while and do what I do best...well I think I do  :D Going to do another sunken diorama. This one is a Curtiss Helldiver that has crashed in the Battle of the Philippine sea and is being investigated by the MIR 2 DSV submarine. Looking at 1/144 scale, nothing fancy just the plane, broken and sea weathered half covered on sand/silt and then the Mir 2 hovering close by. Thought it would look rather good.

Will get some piccies up on this thread as I start to make it.

Some early piccies of the Helldiver and the MIR DSV. Both 1/144.

Got the board to do and finish off the plane.

Finished board with models in place. Just waiting for plaque to arrive titled: 'OUT OF FUEL' 45 Helldivers ditched when they ran out of fuel returning to their carriers during THE BATTLE OF THE PHILIPPINE SEA.

Added some paint effects to the plane and opaque painted the canopies-found that many aircraft with canopies intact have gone 'milky' due to the currents and salt. You can just make out patches of blue paint and the squadron's flashes on the wingtip and tail, this is intentional as the depth is supposed to be around the 5000 meters mark so concretions on the aluminium airframe haven't built up as much as they would on a steel structure.

Si,

Like it!  :-)) Just another 44 to make...

How big is the diorama?, and what do you fashion the concretion from?

Hi Andy the models are 1/144 scale so around 3 inch in length approx, very small really.

The board is 8x10, this size gives the impression of vastness as there is plenty of open space around the models, just as it would be on the ocean floor. I use various concretion mixes depending on size of the model-my sunken U-Boat build uses a sand mix but that is far too big and heavy for the 1/144 plane-this is a very fine modelers flock-the type used on dioramas as grass, etc. This is light and is small enough, once glued on it has a light coating of spray paint to seal, very light in this case as I wanted to see the planes original colour and markings just peering through in places. Once dry, sponge techniques are used to build up colour. The board is just a sand mix, glued, dried and then sprayed and sponged.

All told, around 5 hours build time.

Really good! Atmospheric is the wrong word (hydrospheric?!)  but you really capture the feeling of deep seas.
Do you exhibit at any shows?

Hi David, thanks for the kind words. I look at various pictures of sea beds and wrecks to see what I can come up with. Most deep sea beds are pretty non-descript, greys, slimy etc. But due to that the diorama board needs to be slightly bigger to give that feel of vastness, well, that's what I try and do.

Don't do shows, never thought them good enough, although my boat club has said "No problem" in displaying them at our local gala's. So they will be going there.

Some outside shots of the models with a few more detailing works on the plane. Added some more rust staining from the engine, also added some light silver to give the impression of paint wear on the aluminium frame-tail section, wing areas etc. Noticed this on  deep wreck of a zero fighter, over time the shifting sands and current has worn away the paint surface leaving it shiny.

The depth of this model is in the 5000 meters range or 16,400 feet. The MIR has a tested depth of 6000 meters or 20,000 feet. The average depth of the Philippine sea is 6000 meters with the Philippine Trench at 10, 539 meters or 34,578 feet. I thought the plane would be totally wrecked by the impact but apparently fluid dynamics comes into play and if the plane is already flooded it tends to 'leaf' back and forwards between up thrust and then stalls then lifts again with speed, then stalls, hence my model has probably sunk many meters away from where it now rests.

You should think about exhibiting - they are good and a bit different.
The strange thing is that most dioramas need lighting to get attention from the crowd. Yours would need very subtle, low lighting. Viewed behind a curtain perhaps?
I think I remember seeing some twilight dioramas at the Dortmund show like this - they were in a darkened area.

Thanks again David, most encouraging words.

Yeah, you're right, just a darkened area and some subtle highlights is all they would need, never thought of that, maybe some small LEDS from the MIR would look good in a darkened room.

I saw this kit the other day and thought it would be a perfect start for one of your dioramas

Thanks for the link, cheap too. Was looking at a 1/125 U-47 with interior to do a diorama, but the type 21 looks good.

%% Hi,Eddie, great model,I had a mate in the 70s who was a police diver his hobby was marine archaeology he once told that they were diving
in the Bristol channel on the wreck of a u boat which had been scuttled at the end of the war,he said to me that the visibility was so bad that
to find his way around he had to follow the rivets with his fingers along the side of the boat to find the stern, just that your model and talk of
u boats reminded me of that story,hope you are feeling better,Ray :-)) :-)) :-))

Lovely job Eddie.
It amazes me that aluminium lasts that well in salt water.
As a young fleet air arm trainee I had the job of removing
all the avionics from a whirlwind chopper that had ditched
in the sea and was recovered.
We had her in a hangar at Lee on Solent and she was
disintegrating as we worked on her.
Everywhere a steel quick release clip or turns crew was
rivetted to the aluminium the metal was turning to powder.
We had to support her on frames as the weight was pushing
the undercarriage through rotting body.

Yeah, not doing too bad Ray, thanks for asking. Good story, bet that was scary just having to feel your way around...shudder.

I agree Ned, on the beach near our caravan, aluminium bits and pieces from old caravans and boats gets washed up, rolled by the sea and not in too bad condition until you take it out of the water, then it goes flaky and powdery. I also think it depends on depth, temp and salinity of the water, coupled with currents etc. Like I said have seen 50 year old planes still intact, but these have been deep. Closer surface wrecks, like steel tends to be more gnarled and damaged by wave action, sand shift, saltiness etc.

Glad you like it though  ;)

Nice one Dave, good link. Many thanks for that. So, the salinity of the water is a catalyst that basically cause a battery effect against the inert aluminium and any other metal. The aluminium is, eaten away (corroded) as a gas is produce due to the chemical reaction. That is if I have understood it correctly.

Couple of more piccies after I have added some more detailing around the plane and onto the plane itself with some more paint sponging-just wasn't happy and felt it needed some silt spill from touchdown. I also should have angled the engine cowling as it would have landed nose first but I forgot and the model is glued down so don't want to start to messing. That is it-finished apart from the plaque.

Many thanks for the kind words. The skill is not too difficult, a wrecked boat, plane etc is far easier to do than a standard static model. The model itself doesn't have to be pristine and nor does the paint job. The skill, if any, is learning to build up the concretion layers with various flocks, sands to suit the scale of model. Then it is just fine-tuning the painting/sponging to get the desired effect.

Thanking you again for taking the time to look and comment, appreciate it.
