Radar ID help please
« on: May 07, 2013, 09:20:00 pm »

Hi everyone

Can any one identify the smaller radar scanner beneath the large 'bird cage' radar. The large one I have positively identified as a Type 277Q or 278 surface warning radar, and I can see what is called 'Huff Duff' of WW2 vintage that sits in front and above the bridge windows. But what is the 'rotating' scanner or its designation?
The ship is HMS Protector and the photo was taken in the mid 1960s.
Many thanks.

Type 974 or 978
A lot of ships were initially installed with the 974 but later replace by the 978, the two are very similar :-))

You would be right to bet your tot Geoff.
Type 974 high def (for those days) surface radar used mainly for navigation.
The box below the scanner held the transmitter unit and the receiver klystron
and everything was transmitted below by slip rings and cable.
The 978 which superceded it was waveguide fed from the top of the
hoghorn and was brought out in an elongated d shape to allow the scanner to rotate
inside it.
The 277 scanner above is actually a target aquisition radar and was used primarily for height
finding as it could 'nod' as wall as rotate. 278 came along later.
I think there was a 277M and 277Q the only difference being the power output with the scanner being the same.

Thanks Ned for clearing that up, I'm presuming the 277 is to help guide the twin 4inch Mk XIX gun below.
I'm trying to find some 1/72 scale versions but I've only found a type 978 from Fleetscale so it looks like I'll be scratch building them from my Jecobin plans.
Regards
