British Waterways mini tug revisited.
« on: May 12, 2013, 11:07:05 am »

Here in Denmark we have quite a few mini-holidays in the spring.
I was looking for a small project that i would be able to make during the 'Kristi himmelfarts (Ascension of Lord)' vacation.
I'm also the happy owner of a small garden pond so the project should fairly small and easy to build.

By incident i stumpled over a Marine Journal article about British Waterways 'new' (2005)
mini pusher tug. At the bottom of the page there is a few pictures that shows the rather 'boxy' style of the mini tug. This should not be to difficult to build.
http://www.maritimejournal.com/news101/vessel-build-and-maintenance/vessel-launch/small__and__green_is_ideal_for_british_waterways

The dimensions of the tug is L: 6 meters, width 2.07 m and a draft of 0.73 m. Using a standard balsa sheet sized 110x10 cm for the deck this would imply a scale of approx 1:20 with LxW as 30x10 cm.

The pictures was printed out on paper and approximate measures was taken from the photo's. For ease of construction it was decided to make the side's flat, sort of Glynn Guest style.

Most likely i will not finish today last day of the mini holyday  ok2 , but there is some progress.
Here is the first cut and gluing of the hull sides made of 5 mm balsa.

Work with the hull is slowly progressing.
Here's the hull with cutaway in the deck and buttom of hull being glued.
Buttom and deck are made of 3 mm balsa.

Drive line.
I've decided to use a Graupner multispeed 140 unit as driveline. I have a Graupner Pollux, seen in background, that uses the same driveline.
The Pollux with a multispeed 140 is capeable of going (way to) fast.

As the size of the hulls are almost the same, i believe there will be power enougth,
even though the mini tug is very 'boxy'.

Interesting subject! Wonder what all those little tugs do for a living? Are they pushing barges with cargo or are they working with maintenance on the canals? And that Pollux looks really nice, much better than the original.
All the best!

Thx. for your comment regarding the Pollux 'mod'. The Graupner origional seems rather simple out of the box.
Regarding the tugs i think they are mainly used for maintenance on the canals as you suggest.

To big!

I have no expirience working from photo's instead of a drawing. In this case i have used 'bottom right corner' photo, the one where the tug is in the water. I simply measured the length of the hull on the photo and calculated that measures should be multiplied by 1.3 to get the scale lenth.
This should do approx for length measures, but seemed wrong for the heigt. I decided to make a quick dummie wheelhouse of cardboard using the factor 1.3 to judge i was 'off the track'.
The result is depicted below. There is no doubt, the wheelhouse is to high.
Instead i decided to take the height measure from 'bottom left corner' photo. Measuring on this photo indicates that the height of the wheelhouse should 75 mm instead the 90 mm of the cardboard wheel house. Hope that will look better.

I have lately been working on the tug Hein from Peba kits.https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,65265.0.html

In order to do something very different, I have switched to this old project,
with the Waterways tug. When I left al the 'hard work' had been done.
The hull with drive-line ruder and Rc was ready and it have even had it's sea-trial.
Here we see the drive-line with room for 4 C-size alkaline 1.5 volt batteries. Good for ballasting.

The main issue was the wheelhouse size.
A new smaller one was made of ply, balsa and cardboard.
At a later stage the 'windows' will be painted gloss black.
