Brushless motor & esc for Robbe lightening
« on: May 15, 2013, 07:26:51 am »

HI all, can anyone recommend a brushless motor & esc for a Robbe Lightening? I've recently purchased the boat secondhand and it's not as fast has it could be so I thought I'd go brushless instead of replacing the brushed one. The boat is single hull and 790mm long.
Thank you  :-)

Motor is a nono on 22.2v
Only 14.8V.

??? not sure what that means Ned, could you use 'idiots terms' please?   :embarrassed:

Ebay speed controller - "Water cool brushless 100A ESC BEC output 5A Speed controller for RC Boat"
Just be aware that they are 'Hong Kong Amps'... which are a bit like "dog years!!!"
( they may be a little.... "generous" with their specifications!  ok2

The motor is rated at 14.8v max.
Not advisable to run it on 22.2volts.
No no= negative negative {-) {-)

What size prop is on the boat, what voltage do you want to run. they are the questions that really need answering. Basically for a FE boat you wat to keep no load RPM to below 35000 RPM  so 35000/ battery volts will give you an approximate Kv value to look for. the first motor may well be OK on 22 volts with a small prop but I think it my be too small for the lightning.

On an inferred guess though I think a 36 series motor would be better than a 28 series, they have greater torque to spin what I think you might have for a prop.

Example
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brushless-watercooled-motor-1800kv-3688-2S-to-6S-6volt-22volt-/121111401282?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item1c32cd5342

but in a Kv to suit your preferred battery voltage as per the above formula, you can use a lower Kv than the formula calculates if you are happy with less speed with greater runtime but don't go with a higher Kv.

Cheers
Nick
