Spektrum help.
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:09:15 pm »

Can anyone help me? I have a Speckrum DX5e transmitter and have successfully blinded an AR500 receiver to it. I thought (maybe wrongly) that I could use the same transmitter for other models too and bought another receiver (AR 400) but I can't bind it to the receiver. The RX flashes in bind mode but won't connect. Is it possible to bind two RXs to one TX. The 1st receiver was switched off and unpowered when I tried to bind the second one. Is the some secret to doing this? Thanks for any help.

You have put a bind plug in the rx when you are trying to bind the pair
Hope this helps Aid .

Yes I have done that. The first was binded (or is it bound?) straight away but the second one won't bind and just continues to flash with the bind plug in the bind/batt socket and the power into any of the other sockets.

As I understand it, the spektrum RC car receivers will not bind with the park flyer or other transmitters.
The DX5 can bind with other recievers, but it can only remember one receiver. So by binding a second
receiver, it has essentially forgotten the first.

The higher end DX6i and other transmitters have a "model memory", and will remember up to 10 receivers(models)
and all their trim and pre sets.

I have two AR500 and one AR400 receivers bound to the one DX5e without any problems.
I just used the standard binding plug each time following the instructions that came with the first combo.

Now I am getting confused about 2.4 Radios.

Whilst we are speaking specifically about Spektrum, I understood that the advantage of 2.4 was not only no frequency clashes but more than one receiver could be bound to a single transmitter albeit the receiver being the same brand/model.

So am I misinterpreting, or missed something, or is this just a specific issue with Spektrums?

I use my DX5e with a variety of DSM2 receivers including AR500, Orange and an unbranded one I got from Giant Cod! - no problem  at all. The DX5e will not bind to DSMx receivers as I understand it.

Spektrum have used three different  techniques DSM, DSM2 and DSMx. Not all transmitters are compatible with all three

Looks like the current Dx5e will support DSM2 and/or DSMx receivers; the website is a bit ambiguous on that point. Maybe you have a counterfeit receiver (See footnote)? Either that or Spektrum have changed the spec of this radio.

Umi
My understanding is that a 2.4GHx transmitter is not looking for any feedback from associated receivers and so it does not 'remember' how many receivers have been bound to it. A receiver, on the other hand, will only work with the last Tx with which it was bound.

Hi Cabman,

Just to confirm, the current DX5e will bind with both DSM2 and DSMX Spektrum receivers. How old is your DX5E ...... this product was introduced before Spektrum introduced DSMX. For your reference the AR500 (now discontinued) is a DSM2 receiver and the A400 is a DSMX receiver. Generally there is compatibility between DSM2 and DSMX products. However there could be a software issue depending on how old your DX5e is.

Also, (I'm trying not to be a smart 'bottom' here), when you went to bind the AR400 I assume you had the bind plug in the receiver and THEN turned on the transmitter in bind mode.

In case any newcomers are reading this I can assure you that it is possible to bind multiple receivers to the same transmitter and therefore use one transmitter with several different models. In doing this it is preferable to use transmitters which have multiple model memory (DX6i, DX8, DX18, DX10) ...... the DX5e does NOT have this feature. That way you can have a scale model that has both forward & astern with the throttle stick normally in the middle position set as Model 1 and something like an electric power boat with forward only (i.e. throttle stick normally at the bottom) set as Model 2. It is also possible to set a fail safe and an alarm should you accidentally turn on the power boat with the throttle stick advanced. This is a very sensible thing to do, as brushless motors and Lipo batteries are a very powerful and potentially dangerous combination. Propellors have no respect for fingers !!!!

Steve,

My DX5e is at least 5 years old - do you know if the software can be upgraded? Its not a problem at the moment, but could be in the future if DSM2 Rxs cease to be avaialble.

Hello BarrieW

I will be in contact on Monday (20th May) with Spektrum (as I'm involved in a project with them) and see if I can get some clarity regarding the DX5e and its software revisions.
This may take a number of days to get an answer depending on how quick the guys in the US are in responding.
What ever I manage to find out I will post on this topic for everyones benefit.
Steve.

Thanks Steve. It's working now but I have both instructions from the DX5e and the AR400 RX and can save you the trouble. The RX user guided states

IS DSMX COMPATIBLE WITH DSM2?

DSMX is fully compatible with all DSM2 hardware. In fact, many pilots may find the DSM2 equipment they have now is all they will ever need. Even if a new DSMX transmitter eventually comes along that they really want, all the DSM2 receivers they have now will work with it. It is important to note, however, that while dSMX is compatible with DSM2, the only way to experience the full benefits of DSMX in a busy 2.4 environment is by pairing a DSMX transmitter with a DSMX receiver.

ARE DSM2 TRANSMITTERS ELIGIBLE FOR A DSMX ADD-ON?

Yes. DX8 owners can simply download Spektrum AirWare software from spektrumrc.com and update the firmware using their SD card. All DSM2 transmitters, except the DX5e, are eligible for DSMX add on by going to https://community.spektrum.com for details.DSM2 receivers are not eligible for the DSMX add-on

I hope this makes it clearer. Thanks again
