Dimensions of ropes / lines / hawsers
« on: April 01, 2014, 04:10:42 pm »

I've just bought an Amati Ropewalk and I have to say that despite mixed reviews, it is an excellent, if slightly pricey, piece of kit. I have managed to produce some convincing looking ropes (and wire hawsers) of various sizes and would now like to make the appropriate sizes for my Imara (1:32). Does anyone know what diameter / circumference / length tow ropes and mooring lines she would have carried and how many 'ply' they would have been?

Any suggestions for suitable cottons etc would also be welcome.

Thanks

Richard

For deck work and all purposes, but not running rigging manila was used and probably 4 strand for the towing spring. Then twice the breaking strain was used as the max working strain. Email me for details on manila and wire rope make up etc, the tables will not load on this site.

I have some thickish linen thread (get it at leather working suppliers) that would make the strands in a thicker rope, comes in big 500g rolls.

Hi, Lighterman, I have used that cord myself several times and as you say it comes in different sizes and is quite convincing plus not too expensive to purchase.

Hi rgl2422, ref size of towing spring, if the Perseverance had a bollard pull of about 12t then it would be probably made from 9" circumference or 73mm dia 4x strand manila.
