RHUBARB CRUMBLE
« on: May 21, 2013, 08:54:12 am »

Well guys....let's not say that this forum isn't diverse, %% %% %% %%

I like my bit o' Rhubarb crumble like any man, and here and there and now and then have grown a heart of Rhubarb in the garden before..............but what you see has never happened to me before in all the years that we as a family have had them growing...........

the thing has grown to seed.

Now, when my dad came to tea last friday he told me that the plant was now poisenopus to eat because it had grown to seed.......

DOES THAT MEAN the whole plant, or just the long stalk that has shot to seed, and will the other stalks be OK to eat...............or should the plant as a whole be pulled up and start again...........

Any good botanists or gardeners out there who can help, as I have searched the internet and found nothing on seeded Rhubarb.

please excuse surrounding weeds...................must get the misses busy on the garden {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Cheers,

neil.

Hi Neil, I would keep your dad round your place for a while,  what he is saying will keep your plants fertilized for years!!! ok2 ok2

The rhubarb is perfectly safe to eat as normal. After all the plant is only trying to do what comes naturally and reproduce..

Neil,
Why do things the hard way - just look it up: http://www.rhubarb-central.com/rhubarb-flowers.html
All you are likely to get on here is a load of old Rh......

Rhubarb leaves are poisonous, but the stalks aren't. If you don't cut the flower back you won't get a very good crop as the plant puts all it's effort into producing seeds. Hhmmm Rhubarb crumble and custard!!!  :-))

From school I've always hated Rhubarb Crumble, a friend was always goading me to
try it as an adult, I said if you cook a pie yourself from your home grown rhubarb, I'd try it.

He did and it was absolutely wonderful!

Cut the flower off now as above, yes leaves are not to healthy for you and I have been advised not to put it in the compost heap either..

My Rhubarb is doing that this year - it's at least ten years since it did it last. Out with the knife tomorrow, then.

Neil said .... "Now, when my dad came to tea last Friday" .... you are very lucky Neil that your dad can come over & visit & offer worldly advice on gardening  :o ...I used to treasure the same with my dad...who was also a brilliant wood worker....far more talented than his sons.... :D
He was made an Honorary Senior Life Member of The Australian Woodworkers Society  :-)) ....alas just a few years before his passing...................Derek

Just liberated some from the garden.... rhubarb and apple crumble at the weekend methinks.  Tho the wife makes a mean rhubarb cake.  Its basically a simple sponge mix with chunks of rhubarb mixed in then spread on a baking sheet
