Car fan motors
« on: May 19, 2013, 06:46:51 pm »

Hi guys,
when I visited the Coalville Boat Show, I noticed one or two retailers
selling what looked like car fan motors.( black rivited can )
Has anyone tried them or know what amps they pull and rpm
compared to the 900 motors?

Come on guys, some one out there must have purchased 1.
I would have thought that with being a motor for a car
they must be quality, and low drain.
Dont be shy tell me what you think(about the motors)

Hi John

Whilst we didn't buy any from Coalville we have used car heater motors in our models since we started over 8 years ago. The are 12 pole and designed to run 24 hours a day at variable speeds, we have tried everything from 3v to 36v and they have performed very well- not even getting hot!
They are quite low drain compared to 850s and 900s pulling about 3amp at low speeds/low demand levels and pull about 12amp at 12v at high demands/high speeds.
We have yet to see one seize or fail!
They are designed to last, most of our versions are at least 10years old and the comms are not even worn.
Our mate bought a rev counter tester and got an estimation of 4000revs at 12volts but they are very torquey motors, when we started modelling we bought two 850motors and stalled them accidentally burning out the Escs, the reason? The 850s only had 4poles and compared to the car heater motors they felt like Diesel engines to finely tuned petrol engines!
We use different models to our needs, small model boat (ie 4ft) we use examples from VW Polos, for larger models (anything up to 7ft) we use Rover 214, VW Golf or Vauxhall Caviler motors. All them were bought from scrap yards for about £5each.
You just need to make you own motor mounts and couplings and you are away!
If you so wish you can have the motor turn at 1rev per minute!
Hope this helps

Regards

John....agree with most of the comments here from raflaunches,,,,with the exception of stall current  :o the versions supplied here in oz appear to be 0.8amp @ 12 volt & no load to approx. 3.5 amp stall torque @ 12 volts.........mind you, you cannot get them to stall with thumb & fore finger  <:( internally supressed :-))
So...if your vessel can afford the larger sized engine cage ...go for one....you won't regret  it......Derek

been using car heater motors for a good 30 years.absolutely reliable.I have 4 renault motors in my HMS RAMILLIES,and although she is far from finished she runs exceptionally well.We used to get them from scrapyards for a couple of quid each, and when the scrappys realised the shoved the price up to a tenner.still a bargain though!

Hi Gazou, that is an impressive set up you have there.
What is the tug boat you have them fitted in?

I fully agree with all the others that car heater motors are wonderful for displacement model boats & even planning hulls if you run the at higher voltages - although I haven't personally done this.

I would just question your question. "looked like" doesn't necessarily mean actually were.

There are now very large numbers of smaller Chinese motors available that power scooters, electric bikes etc etc etc. They are normally 24-48v. Make sure that you know what you are buying.

A picture would help as there are actually relatively few different motors fitted to car heaters in European cars.

Hi John44
The motors are fans of golf.
These are not the engines internal heating.
This is not a tug, it is a supply of 168 cm and 70 kg ( roughly 140 pounds )
