Whats this boats significance?
« on: December 12, 2023, 12:03:58 pm »

Have a question,

Many, many, many years ago, when I was a teenager, my sister had a German penpal, I visited them once when I was 17, but in the previous years we were sent christmas presents, of which one was the following - a picture, it is a brass plate engraving on a hardwood plaque, its now showing its age having been up in the loft for 30 years.

So what is the story or significance of the vessel ?

There appears to be [2] two references to Holland in the image........in 1647, was Holland not a a naval power?  O0 .....

So possibly a cross Nationality question? ;D

There is a bit of info on the plate here https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/361528 and here https://www.rct.uk/collection/803171/a-flute-boat It is also in the British Museum, listed as a German piece, if I am not mistaken.

It is noted as one of 12 plates

It looks like the artist, Holler, did many etchings, including seascapes. It is possible that this is just a random Dutch freighter that that was sailing past as he sketched. From what I can see in the texts, this is an unidentified/unnamed merchant ship, a flute.

I assume it's an en-mass reproduction easily available in the 80's, the picture from the RCT is a the same, the description does'nt mention the 3 rd vessel either.

It was common in this type of engraving to show the same ship from different angles.

A flute was a typical type of trading vessel, much like the more modern schootes of my time which traded between Holland and U/K.
