Yes Ned, you're quite correct about the pub - however, the "Kings Head" public house (above the fish quay) is now bearing the name wooden dolly - so, she's finally made her way back up the stairs. {-)

Ray.

I think I read the book about this dog some years ago but forgot most of it. Was it connected with Newfoundland/Nova Scotia  Duncan? Also possibly a warships dog? Clutching at straws here.  Bob.

At last one that I can answer. This is the statue of Bamse at Montrose harbour. Bamse was a Norwegian St Bernard who served on the Norwegian minesweeper Thorodd during WW2. He was a registered member of the Navy and became the mascot for the Norwegian navy until his death in Montrose in 1944.http://www.bamsemontrose.co.uk/index.php

Correct Jim :-)).  An intelligent dog that used to go round the pubs to collect sailors and guide them back to their ship.  He had a bus pass to allow him to travel to the outskirts of town and further, a good read if you find the book.  As a footnote, this breed, Newfoundlander, is also nicknamed  "water dogs" and are trained as rescue animals in water . They are good strong swimmers and can pull a person to safety. Massive paws act as paddles

Sorry...out of turn [again!]......but hey %) we got a bronze dog on a box too  O0...with a nautical theme also

In 1857 in a little town about 1/2 way between Sydney & Melbourne called Gundagai....well all of the shearers & drovers from miles around would come into the local pub on Friday nights....drink themselves stupid and create Mayhem

At the end of the night the dog would drag each of the drunken fools to the local Billagong & throw them in to sober up :-))

So after all these years in 1926, the towns folk had an image of the nameless dog cast in bronze & mounted on a Tucker Box

Now if we only had a member who lived in Canberra .......he may be able to tell us more, as Canberra is only a hop, skip & a jump from the famed statue at Gundagai  of...."Dog on the Tucker Box"{-)

Derek

PS....[for the Poms]....a Billabong is a sort of pond of water, fed by a creek  :P.....you may have heard the one about a Jolly Jumbuck camped by a Billabong....under the shade of a Coolabah tree [and complete with his wine cask]

I thought someone from Edinburgh might have got this one.  The statue is of Wojtek the Bear,  Polish WW11 war hero is in Prince`s Street Gardens. The story of a brown bear cub purchased from a beggar in Persia who grew up in the Polish Army as a fully enlisted soldier ,  (he carried ammunition at Monte Casino) and ended up living in Edinburgh Zoo after civilian life in the Scottish Borders at the end of the war is recorded in a book by Aileen Orr. The epilogue by Neal Ascherson is reminder of the debt we owe to the Polish soldiers and airmen who fought with such valour against the Nazis who had destroyed their homeland .  ISBN 978-184341-065-2

And not forgetting the Polish Navy.  In particular the ship ORP Blyskawica. (Lightening) Who on the 4-5th of May 1942 saved the Town Of Cowes IOW. from obliteration

Yes of course, my mistake.  All the Polish services and civilians who helped in various ways to beat the Hun in WW11.  Thanks for reminding me.
