Derek, no foliage like that near Hadrian`s Wall ! I think it is more likely to be in your neck of the woods, certainly very much south of Hadrian`s Wall.  Maybe Ned Kelly`s hideout  but I don't see a boat connection there. Maybe the "Meercat" is a Joey?  I don't know any other legends from down under.

I have checked the original hi res image and there is no animal lurking, it's just a random pattern of grasses. Possibly in it's heyday this place might have had lions around, (it isn't in Africa), and Lions do symbolise the entrance to the place, plus a nearby locality is famous for its lion, - I have probably given too much away now.... The nautical reference is strong but indirect.

You are quite right actually Perkasaman  I knew I had given it away with reference to the Lion Gate and the Nemean Lion killed by Hercules.

The ship connection? Agamemnon, the Lord of Mycenae reputedly led 1,000 ships to Troy to 'rescue' the fair Helen. (He also had five Royal Navy ships named after him.)

Aw :(( I was going to say Venice with all their winged lions <:(   Not having had a classic education I was guessing the nearby lions were in the Colosseum , Rome, kinda "nearby". :embarrassed: Couldn't find a boat connection except gondolas

Yep, easy one!  -  "The Little Mermaid is a bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen, depicting a mermaid. The sculpture is displayed on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen, Denmark."

How about this one?!

"Boy with a Dolphin' sculpture by David Wynne, 1975, on Cheyne Walk in Chelsea", London

Is the correct answer!
