I know Skye very well but that view is seen by very few - maybe fishermen? Not a clue?
Or on a Ferry.

Well it is the entrance to Uig Bay at the far northern end of the Trotternish peninsula so I will let it go at that - but I have yet to find the name for the headland. the area is well worth an extended visit if your in the area.

Hi LB,
The northern headland at the entrance to Uig bay is Ru Idrigill.
I have had the pleasure of some sea kayaking out of Uig & up the coast to the north. Some great views from the sea.

Not really a 'quiz' question but I am trying to identify the possible location shown in this painting of an early 19C steam-paddler.  The castle and lighthouse might be good clues.   Any ideas?

Could be Fort Perch Rock on the Mersey.

I think boatcaptain is probably correct as the lighthouse and fort could well be at Fort Perch Rock showing the ship heading upriver. I had a sneaking suspicion that it might have been the Mersey but as I had no knowledge of that area, I posed the question. I am interested in the Paddle Steamer 'Elizabeth' which was the first steamship to operate on the Mersey and was introduced in 1815 to operate between Liverpool and Runcorn. I thought this picture may have been of the Elizabeth. I am still not sure of the identity of the ship though. Thanks for suggestions to all. :-))

Yes, the Paddle Steamer picture is Perch Rock but I had been thinking Hurst Castle. I found this on the web.
Walters, Samuel[/t]CreditNational Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, Caird CollectionMaterialsoil on canvasMeasurementsPainting: 723.9 x 1206.5 mm; Frame: 910 x 1400 mm
  • The Paddle Steamer 'Ariel'
  • A scene showing shipping on the Wirral, now known as New Brighton, Liverpool. In the background is the Perch Rock Fort and Lighthouse. Other shipping is also depicted, including another paddle steamer on the left, together with smaller sailing boats. The paddle steamer in the painting has always thought to have been the ‘Ariel’. Formerly called the ‘Arrow’ she was built in 1821-22, and went into straight into service at Dover. She was transferred to the mail service in April 1825 and it is possible that she is shown visiting Liverpool between 1825-33 en route for Ireland. The ‘Arrow’ was taken over by the admiralty 1837 and renamed ‘Ariel’. She continued to be the Dover packet until 1846. A steam packet service from Liverpool to Kingstown was commended by the PO August 1826. There were four vessels on this route, ‘Dolphin’, ‘Comet’, ‘Etna’ and ‘Thetis’ and were built large enough to enable them to compete with steamships of private companies operating from Liverpool to Ireland. Since this painting shows a furled sail behind the funnel and the riser pipe from the boiler safety valves it is more likely to be one of the larger Liverpool Post Office packets such as the ‘Lightning’ which was the first PO steam packet to be ordered from Evans of Rotherhithe in 1820. The painting is signed and dated ‘Walters and Son 1831’.
