Photo taken about 8 years ago on an ixus 60, been reduced in size so degraded a bit for easy posting.

Forbidden city has a moat around it but no lakes etc inside the walls other than the odd small pond in the gardens

Image is Ghinggis Khaan (Using the correct Mongolian spelling)

The reason for no red flags is linked to the place itself, note the yellow flags which is a huge clue :)

The colours of the roofs also indicate that it cant be the forbidden city as the buildings there have roofs of two colours to indicate usage

Is nobody else going to have a guess ? Yellow flags ..hmmm, typhoid ,plague, isolation hospital ? Or does the yellow flag belong to higher class in the classless society, maybe the mandarins of old ? I give up.

Close enough, its just the living and workers area in the summer palace which is indeed in the Haidian area :)

dont see why not, there is a huge lake called Kungming. For sure you can in Houhai which is where I go and also fish there as there is no enterance fee. There are lakes all over Beijing for fishing, boating and even swimming in summer

there is no reason why ROC members cant access the forum and forums in general other than language barriers, the only real barriers I know of are the well known Facebook blocks but many people use proxy servers to get round that restricion.

Whilst a lot of young people speak basic english having learnt at school its only in the major cities that they are likely to get a chance to talk to a forigner. Writing is much more difficult as its not just a simple translation the two languages have different fundamental concepts. The older generation as a rule dont know english.

I live in Beijing about 50% of my time, month there then a month UK etc.

I dont know of any boat clubs whatsoever, I do travel around china quite a bit including well away from "western" areas but water hobbies seem to be boating as in riding in them, fishing and kite flying (they like the steady air streams you tend to get along the rivers) but then Im all new to this, I know a couple of steam enthusiasts and one is into boats but lives in the south and is active on a number of forums.
