Its not the voltage but the amperage that dictates wire size, but I would go for either 12 or 10Awg multistrand wire.  Its better to have wires that are to thick than too thin

You may find this table useful. 10AWG is well over the top for this application IMHO - I'd use 14 or even 16 as they are much easier to work with.
AWG                Conductor dia (mm)               Max current (Amps)
10                                2.59                                         55
12                                2.05                                         41
14                                1.63                                         32
16                                1.29                                         22
18                                1.02                                         16
20                                0.81                                         11
22                                0.66                                         7
BTW 'AWG' stands for American Wire Gauge

thank you Dave, you explained it much better than I did. I wasn't certain on the current draw of said motor so erred on the side of caution.
Personally I go one bigger than needed if the current draw is close to the wire limit

ok i see the the lower the the gage # the thicker the wire
i ended up using about 1.6 mm wire ( not counting the insulation )
ran it for about 10mins  ( no load though ) no wires got hot ( will throw it in the pool to morrow and let it run pushed up in the corner  and see how it goes

what is the difference of silicon wire to normal wire ?
THANKS

 1. Flexibility.

 2. Expense.

The term applies to the sheathing, Silicon as opposed to PVC. PVC hardens over time.

silicone all the way... If i remember correctly it has a higher melting point was well (not that it matters in this application)

Also melting point. Standard PVC insulation breaks down at quite low temperatures while silicon ones can withstand much higher ones without melting or catching fire. Component Shop's silicon-covered wire is rated up to 200C and is MUCH cheaper than most other suppliers.
Just another happy customer, as they say  8)

I use component shop silicone insulated wire, and even using a
small blow torch to solder connectors on it does not melt
the insulation.

Personally I prefer silicone insulated wire for low voltage DC power, in as heavy a gauge as practical for the connections.  It is flexible, the gauge gives minimum DC resitance, and is mechanically more reliable than thin PVC wire.

Mate,

You may want to check the local Auto parts warehouses, such as Autobarn, etc, for wire.

They have small rolls of wire suitable for our needs with the size and amperage marked on the label.

Could be cheaper than Jaycar. :-)) :-))

Correct, when Dick Smith was owned by Dick Smith himself, they were into kits and bits and pieces etc but now are an Electrical retailer.

Are now owned by Woolworths.

Jaycar has no competition and are getting expensive, so need to shop for alternate suppliers.

Your local auto electrician may be able to 'sell' you some bits.
They deal with DC wiring sytems everyday :-)) :-)) :-))

I believe that Component Shop will mail goods to Australia for a relatively modest postage charge.

oldshrimper....any of the electrical warehouses are going to want to sell you a 100m roll........ <*<
Figure 8 speaker wire [Monster Cable] has phase marking on one leg...comes in a huge variety of conductor sizes...just a thought  ;D  ....like how many meters do you need?  :-X
RAAArtyGunner........I think Woollies have just divested their ownership of Dick Smith.........they are certainly  a far cry from the old  days of ownership by tricky dickey himself......... Derek

The Component Shop for me every time. Their wire is top quality & cheap, better prices also the more you buy. They have all the right colours in nearly every gauge we use. Fast shipping & great to deal with as well, & finally no rip off on shipping. Just a happy customer. Mick B.

Also when it comes to batteries you get what it says in the description..... If its says 3000Mah then it is actually 3000Mah, not like some of the cheaper ebay sellers
