Righto, went sailing with club this morning and all was well until I got a burnt out ESC, never mind. Once back home my mate phoned me and suggested a 5 hour diorama challenge!
RULES: 5 hour deadline. Model had to be scratch built from junk and only one small piece of proper model item used if need be, had to be painted and mounted.
So, I set out scouring the junk bin and decided to do what I do best...yep, you guessed it, a sunken WWII mini sub.
The proper piece of model kit I used was a small brass propeller and that was all.
So, what did I use and how did I build it?
I had some used inhalers so I used the caps to make the two hull parts, stripped the insides to make the small conning tower and periscopes and other internals to give a section of inside hull bracing and access way. A small piece of old plastic tubing was added for effect.
To fasten together the whole structure, inside and out, was welded by using my soldering iron, quicker than glue and far stronger. Once complete it was onto the grinding wheels for some destructive and decayed work, then it was my sand coat, then sealed in spray paint, left as long as I dare in the sun and then mounted to a rather nice plinth, seabed added and then sponged. The rudder and planes supports are just copper wire bent into place-rudder and planes lost.
Bottom picture shows inhaler as it should be, then the two caps hot welded together with the internal part of the inhaler attached to the top-this was a test piece and not actually used as the weld was crud so re-did it using two more and then added internal structure, not really visible on the pictures.
Total build time: 4 hours and 47mins.
My mate made a plane but dropped it and it fell apart...silly boy
Some piccies of the winner!
Si:)
