Help :( :( boat sunk
« on: June 06, 2013, 05:41:43 pm »

Hi, I have a miss geico pro boat running 6s with turnigy aquastar 120 esc.

I took the boat out for the first time yesterday with its new esc was very pleased with it maybe a little to fast due to it flipping and smashing the hood so it sunk (well nearly). So I took it home dried it all out plugged everything back together but now all I get is the 6 beeps to tell me there are 6 cells then I just get a constant beep with 0.5 second intervals there is no power when I trigger the throttle and there is also no light on my spektrum mr200 receiver.

Any ideas what the problem will be?

Thanks in advance :)

Baisically everything needs longer to dry or they could be terminally dead........leave then in the sun for a couple ofdays and try again if they dont work then sorry to say this but bin them

depends on the esc... was it a waterproof one?

If you can strip the servo and receiver (Get the tops off).  this will help the drying process and will give a better indicator of how far the water got in

It's sais its waterproof but I've red a few reviews with people saying its not. I will strip the receiver and servo tonight and leave in the sun tomorrow, I have put it in my car all day today on the dash in the sun got fairly so that should have helped the drying out.

I thought it may just be the receiver that has broken due to the fact the esc still knew how many cells was connected would this still do this if it was broken?

I think it's probably the receiver and servo that will be knackered, had a similar experience with 1 of my boats, a lot more powerful than I thought it would be, the bow dug into the wake from another boat and got about an inch of water in the hull. Receiver died instantly, oddly the servo still worked at the time, but when it dried out it was knackered.

Another couple of things I thought I should mention is that when I plug the esc programming card in it doesn't show any lights. I also put the old esc back on to see what happened and there was no beeps or power from the old esc :(

yeah as long as the white plug will go into the reciever....if not all you got to do is to change the plug for a servo type plug

For future reference, when this happens, if you can strip the soaked component and wash it in clean water as soon as possible you will increase the chances of saving it.

Sometimes, when this happens, its the muck in the water left behind when soaked that causes the terminal failure as it creates a short circuit track.

Its worked for me a couple of times, so its worth a try!

Yes, what boatmadman says.

I would also add, strip down all the electronics, wash with warm soapy water ( Fairy Liquid etc. ),
then rinse in clean water, shake dry and then full dry in the airing cupboard etc.
( Not in the sun or on any hot ).

Good luck!

the other trick is to put it in the airing cupboard in a plastic bag with a handful of dry rice grains, these soak up the moisture as it is released from the electronics, does need a good few days to completely dry out though.

I have washed all components in warm soapy water and now left to dry.

I have decided to purchase the new parts just in case they still don't work and won't hurt to have spares if the old parts start working again, will it just be the esc and receiver that will most likely be broken, if not what else will I need?

Thanks.

Not soapy water it will leave a residue, best cure is a soak in denatured alcohol (methylated spirits), it will absorb the moisture and dissolve any residue from the water then leave to dry for 24 hours, sometimes a little assistance from a toothbrush will help to move any corrosion that  can develop. Idealy a recoat of circuit board lacquer to keep moisture off the conductors is a good idea.

Sounds like the receiver ids the culprit in any case.

If you have any those silica gel bags you get inside shoe boxes work well. If you have use a waterproof electronics box it wont hurt to chuck one inside to keep the condensation at bay
