6v reversible water pump wanted.
« on: June 26, 2013, 12:48:04 pm »

Can anyone suggest a 6v reversible water pump that might be suitable for operating a bow thruster in my Revell Queen Mary 2 kit please? Car windscreen washer pumps are 12v and the lower voltage Graupner and Robbe pumps seem a bit expensive.
Any ideas gratefully received!

Hang fire and read all of it first, On my late Escort, the front and rear washers were serviced by a single pump which yes, was 12V. They made it selective by reversing the polarity of the motor and fitting one way valves in the respective water lines so the actual pump flow did work in both directions. 'Taint missile science to substitute a motor.

Thanks for the link Dave but is it reversible? I bought a pump a while back and found out that it wasn't!

Gear pumps are reversible, impeller pumps typically are not.
If the pump feed enters at the center of rotation of the impeller, then it
will not reverse. Some people I know will use two of these type of pumps to
create thrust to either side to mock up a thruster.

It's hard to find an affordable gear pump...
Although model aircraft fuel pumps are reversible so that flyers can
can remove fuel from their airplanes before breaking them down for the day.
Not sure if there is enough flow to make a good thruster.

Got one of these in my huntsman as a cooling pump.

At full power on 4xAA nimh batteries it has enough power to push my huntsman along (albeit very slowly)

That's definitely a gear pump and reversible, just a matter of how much flow it provides.

Thinking aloud.  QM2 has 3 thrusters - use the forward port on port, sternmost on starboard, prop in a box between them, normal motor/coupler/shaft driving the prop.  Unused holes blanked.

Malcolm,
I have already fitted out the bow to use a water pump I'm afraid. One of the holes is used for port, the other for starboard with the third blanked off. Just need the reversible pump!

The Picasso (12v) pump is centrifugal but reversible depending upon direction of rotation - no valves used.

Only use of the one way valves (which are in the pipe lines, NOT the pump) were to stop the reverse rotation scavenging the opposite washer pipe.

Windshield washer pumps are only made to run intermittently & old VW's did not have a washer pump, they used air from the spare tyre. Oh God I have dated myself again. Mick B.

I have found this one which is reversible and only cost me a fiver:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BN-Universal-12V-Lucas-Type-Windscreen-Washer-Pump-/190735248132?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c68b4eb04
Seems a bit weak on 6v but may be OK as a  bow thruster but I have an 8.4v pack so might try running it off that.
Possibly a bit heavy for plastic magic but I have some Micromotors for the main drive which will hang under the ship and won't weigh much.
