MV Crear & Kystbunker
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:14:17 pm »

After much contemplation, the old neglected MV Crear arrived in the drydock.

The Crear was purchased a long time ago an impulsive buy over fleabay, its a damm shame the nick this boat was in. Someone tried to dollop cream paint on white and pass it off as restored....
The decks are flimsy and bent and leaks like a sive, the fittings are loose and the wheelhouse would literaly cave in in your hands.
I carried on with the sale, having driven so far and maybe mistakenly assumed it was very rare. Its a strange verging on ugly vessel, but there is something really interesting about it.

During research the opportunity to purchase an untouched kit came my way....so the plan was always to strip this beaten up old thing and revamp it into her modern incarnation the Kystbunker.

The Kystbunker was lengthened and given a bulbous bow, exactly the same route the old Crear shall be going, i will be building a new crear at the same time.

Phase 1 complete the strip out, salvage anything worth keeping, tons of cheap squidgy epoxy and silicone in the bowels, i cant complain really as it came off really easy.

 :-))

I did--got it from the postie in a box marked fragile all over-- then I dropped it and broke the crane but have had no other bad experiences with post or couriers-Charlie

Spent hours grinding the moulded strakes off and smoothing them.
This has now left holes in the hull
There was a ton of body filler along where the bilge keels were and where a lead keel had been fixed on the bottom.

All smoothe ready to chop in 2 and lengthened

Hi Chris
I'll follow with interest. Now that lengthening job would make a good trick for a magician
Saw the wife in half, twirl the parts around, and reveal a leaner leggier version.  :}
Oh married 32 years today - I think there may be some misalignment developing too  {-)

She will be lengthened by 185mm in model terms

the Kystbunker was lengtheng to 42m from 34.6m

It will be fun to make this bulby bow, it unusually sits high above waterline, nearly at deck level. perhaps it can double as an icebreaker in the winter. Ill need to think about what power to use, given it is still a single prop

Any suggestions....i have a spare mfa 850.....heard its a bit greedy on amps

Hi Derek

It appears that its just a cut out, there is a matching one the otherside aswell, the original bow was all one line, she now appears to have a lowered recess...dont know why it may help with observation maybe  {:-{

Today the hull was chopped and lengthened, form work has been added ready for glass

Some small sections to do on the stern.

Hello dunworkin

Ive done bits and pieces, it was never going to be a fast process. Ive spent so much of the year drawing, planning and having various meetings to get this off the ground. Im just taking a small break and getting back to a small build, as i miss not being able to make something

Chris,
Thanks for the update.  Good to hear that you are taking some time to "Have Fun" with building and letting the creative juices flow.

Thanks

Real courage is throwing a piece of work in the bin because its not quite good enough.

I made 150, 1:32 crab pots for the Northwestern out of matchsticks. I remember fondly the hours id spend cutting them to size and gluing them.
I must have also bought 3 spray cans of VW orange......

I was always 50/50 even when making them...( Theyll do ) hmmm actually no they flippin wont.... {-) {-)

to many hours to count......i tell myself it was a patience and letting go exercise  :-))
