Hull number font ?
« on: March 16, 2013, 11:43:03 pm »

I have some decal paper and was going to have a go at making my own hull numbers for my type 81 Tribal  (1970's era)
Could someone advise me of a suitable font (and perhaps size for 1/96).

Thanks
Ted  :police:

Dear Ted,

O.K.,

you would not pay THAT money for it, but at least it gives a hint "this angular typeface is inspired by the pennant numbers on British Royal Navy warships":

I chuckle when I think about it being called Heidi!!!!

If you google "stencil fonts" (images) you get a great choice. Some of them are free!

Cheers,
Lars

Cross finger, this is the third time I've tried to past this reply.  :((

I once asked someone at defence standards and got the attached details back. As to font, the answer was none laid down which is why some ships has round numbers etc and some blocked off numbers. When I asked why some ships had no white outline or had the pennant numbers in the "wrong place". The answer was some shipyards and dockyards don't follow laid down procedures and do what they want.
The right place on the hull was with the foremost part of the number in line with the front of the bridge superstructure on the centreline of the ship. But if you look at different Tribals, they don't follow that rule.

I managed to find as font and pass it on to my local sign makers (Chatsworth signs in Barrow in Furness, 01229 832365) they produced some ideal hull numbers with a white border in very thin vinyl. Obviously now they have the font they can reproduce in any size. The smallest they can do is 4mm.
At pocket money prices too, particuarly for a one off print !

Here is a Tribal entering Portsmouth straight from the builders on the Isle of Wight.
This is where JS White Shipbuilders put the Pennant No

I've used vinyl lettering from BECC for my Deans HMS Nubian.
