Hi Jason,You can do that quite easily by using up and down stick for
forwards & reverse and left & right on the same stick for
a mixer, to control the motors for turning the boat.
you just have to decide which stick as usually only1 is spring return.

yes but the motors seem to be working individual when I connect the 2 speed controlers to the rx
if I push forward on left stick one motor will work and if I push forward on the right stick the other motor will work
if you get what I mean , like  I say I am new to this so I apologise if this sounds a bit novice to the more experienced

This is 'Tank Steering' Jason.
You can steer the boat by speeding up one motor and slowing down the other.
Does the boat have a rudder or rudders?
If you have a rudder on the left/right of the stick  then you will need a Y lead to
enable you to connect both esc's to the channel for the up/down on the same stick.
If you are not using a separate receiver battery, you will need to disconnect one of the
receiver plug red leads.

Does the boat have a rudder or is it designed to use the motors for steering?

The article "Do they both go round, mister?" will explain mixers. http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/art.php
