ESC recomendation please
« on: July 28, 2013, 03:22:51 pm »

Hi, another question  :-)

Graupner 700BB turbo on 14.4V, how many amps is it likely to draw ?  I have no current (sorry) means of measuring and can anyone recomend an ESC to do the job please ?

Would it be easier to drop back to 12V ?

TY

PS how do submariners keep the water out of their boats ?

The final current will depend on the load applied to it - the prop size and pitch.

I would tend to use something like a 25 amp minimum with a 20 amp fuse.
The stall current of these motors can be massive.

Fit a fuse holder in one of the battery leads.   Get an assortment pack from the car accessory shop, or possibly a market tool stall.  By empirical testing, (motor under load, motor direct to battery, no ESC) find the highest value that does blow, and use the next up.

Hi,

does anyone have any experience of the Action high powered ESC ie the one that will take more than 12Vs.  Otherwise an ESC that will take 14,4V and 30 amps ???

Muchly Ta.

I'm biased, but Stavros has several of these and swears by them. If he can't wreck a speed controller then it's just about bomb-proof. Incidentally P98 was designed for the Darke Horse 785 geared motors which the Aussie guys run on twenty cells. The MOSFETs are rated at 72A continuous. The unit needs a power supply of between 5.0 and 6.0 volts. This is easiest arranged by running the receiver on a 5-cell pack and fitting a P99 In-line regulator between it and the P98. Click on the Info button here for full details, instructions etc http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/speed.php

Hi Both,

thank you for your answers.  Dave do you use the P19 with a 5 cell receiver battery or the P92 which links into the main power battery.  Not been boating for a while but i often find that it's the receiver battery that I forget to charge up !!!  dooh :-/

I've had a look on the component shop and they do these low self discharge batteries, good idea ?

P92 has a 5v BEC regulator which has a maximum input voltage of 26 volts, as does P19. P92 main fused circuits are also limited to about 25A total current. I would personally power the receiver with a 5-cell NiMH pack and stick a P99 In-line regulator between the ESC and the receiver. I think this is how Stav's Perkasa is set up. When you're dealing with high voltages and currents it's as well to keep them away from logic circuitry (and Welsh water)!
IMHO low self-discharge batteries are OK for transmitters, which are very low-current devices, but I'd personally use the 'regular' type for receivers.
