We model boaters are strange
« on: July 28, 2013, 07:15:13 pm »

{-) Has anyone else noticed that we boaters are a strange lot, today at the lake it started to rain and everybody including myself brought the boats in,we were under cover at the time and not getting wet,the more I thought about it the more illogical it seems, boats are are by their very nature designed to get wet,let me know your thoughts about this,Ray. {-) {-) {-)

Never noticed when it starts raining how many get out of open air swimming pools and run for cover?  %%   O0

If it looks like its going to be heavy rain. I would say its perfectly reasonable.  Recover your boat in relative comfort.  Unless it has everything taped down, heavy rain can and will find a way past all but the biggest coaming.  Ever watched how high rain can bounce?

doesnt stop us from sailing , if the yachts are out in the lake its often just the operators who youll find hiding under the trees , most of our group also have transmitter mitts which help not only keep our hands warm but also keep the wet from our transmitters ! jon

Sorry guys, I may be an enthusiast but I draw the line at going to the lake in the rain.  Too much upperworks detail and rigging that will not take kindly to the big sky hose.  Also wind speeds much in excess of 15 kts (like today) creates swells that can swamp model ships.  At 1/96 scale that equates to around 147 kts, more than double Force 12.

I have been known to turn up at the local pond in the rain, dash out and drop the boat in the water then hop back into the car with a bit of the aerial poking out the window and the wipers running, mind you we can park right on the waters edge..............that's not weird at all is it?

I was thinking the same yesterday. We were sailing at our club's regular day, when a shower came over and everyone immediately packed up. I agree with Bob K though, while the hull may be waterproof, much of the upper works detail is not. It may be OK for a bit of a splash, but steady rain is not good for that detail.

Lucky yesterday as we had no rain until the afternoon, by then the show was over and most had gone home. I agree that when the heavens open the boats, apart from the yachts tend to come in, have seen one fizzle...stop...drift in the rain, it got inside and shorted something out, got in around the top of the wheelhouse as daft as it sounds.

There's a group of us here on the West Coast of the United States that
will continue to sail in the rain. I'd sail with the Aziz in gale force if I had
designed the boat to do that. I call it a challenge.
