Painting problem with blisters?
« on: August 08, 2013, 04:38:31 pm »

Hi all, I have rubbed down the white paint from the hull (not all just to get the brush marks out) and primer coated the hole hull.Masked off the deck and returned it to white, this went well and after remasking the underside started to spray it dark blue. After the first coat I got a reaction which I rubbed out  and primered over the area then aprayed over it again but I am getting three blisters bubbling up again.I have rubbed them down but as soon as the paint starts to dry they balloon up again.
Can anyone advice me what to do to correct the problem.
Rod.

No easy way to say this but rub the whole of the hull down with 180 right through the original paint to the wood or grp or plastic of the hull and prime then top coat as it sounds like a chemical reaction between enamel which has been brushed on.
What make of spray cans are you using.

An acrylic based spray Car plan, it did work fine on the topside without any problem.

If you paint enamel onto acrylic ( or the other way around ) you get a fairly nasty reaction leading to blisters and the paint will fall off , got to keep to the same type of paint to prevent problems , rub down to the bare hull and start again is the only answer I'm afraid

I would go with that  David but I  didn't get any reaction on the topdeck.
I will try to reprime the local area again before going the hole way.

:-)) When repainting an old model it is always best to try a small area for any reaction, that way you can find out what type of paint to use or you can rub down all the old paint and start again, with a very old boat I would rub down as little as possible as this could cause more problems, ray. :-))

Might it be a good idea to read my paint article in the paint section

Hi Dave,

I had a look at your post on painting I do most of that as I us a motor factors .I am  new to model boats and think wet rubbing down is the thing that has created the problem where the wood was exposed.
